Post Earth has a trojan asteroid
A trojan asteroid is an asteroid sitting in one of Earth's lagrange points... those are the points that are more-or-less gravity-neutral. For instance, there's a lagrange point between the earth and the sun where the earth's and sun's gravity counteract one another. There's one between the moon and earth as well, and there's one in front of and behind earth in its orbit. Turns out we have a companion asteroid hanging out in a wild orbit between two of earth's lagrange points. Yay Earth!

Quote:
The Lagrangian points (pronounced /ləˈɡrɑːndʒiən/; also Lagrange points, L-points, or libration points) are the five positions in an orbital configuration where a small object affected only by gravity can theoretically be stationary relative to two larger objects (such as a satellite with respect to the Earth and Moon). The Lagrange points mark positions where the combined gravitational pull of the two large masses provides precisely the centripetal force required to rotate with them. They are analogous to geostationary orbits in that they allow an object to be in a fixed position relative to one or two bodies rather than any more general orbit in which its relative position changes continuously.

Awesome. I knew about Lagrange points, but not about trojan asteroids. Learn something new every day!

Lagrange points are perfect positions for space stations. Virtually stable. I'd love to see us exploit one of those. :)

I was thinking more of a massive inhabited space station, so that humanity has a "backup" in case we blow the shit out of ourselves somtime soon.

Abort, retry, fail?

R!

I'd be ok with that. I'd love to move some really large asteroids into the lagrange points. Mine them for resources, fill the holes you leave with space station. Pure awesome.
