Post Re: Steam sales thread and other bargain stuff
I've had time to check out the overarching "summer camp" action. It's actually quite interesting...just like last year, you can earn 'tickets' for the grand prize raffle by completing some stuff (in-game achievements, but also easy stuff like signing up for the summer sale Steam group), but apart from every one of them counting as an additional entry, you can also use them to 'buy' new or old DLC for games, map packs, in-game items, etc. Sounds like fun. Oh and the grand prize is the first 10 games on 100 users' wishlists.

One of the things in the "camp store" is the first DLC for MoW, but not sure I'll get it since it's MP only.

Checking the full terms and conditions now.

Quote:
Eligibility. Entry open to any user holding a Steam account in good standing with at least ten (10) games in the account’s Wishlist. No payment is required; a Steam account may be established without purchase. One entry per user per Ticket, one manual entry per Summer Camp Activity, one Steam account per individual, and one Sweepstakes win per user.

So, make sure you got at least 10 games on your wishlist and/or switch around games that are more expensive to the top. ;)

Also of interest

Quote:
Sweepstakes Winners. Sponsor will select one hundred (100) winners by random drawing from all valid entries by July 12, 2011. No later than August 1, 2011, Sponsor will hold a random drawing for alternative entries received, using the same odds as applied for the Achievements based Sweepstakes drawing (determined by the number of Achievement entries). Sponsor will award prizes to the alternative entry winners, if any. Sponsor will contact each winner via email to the address registered to the winning Steam account. The decision of the Sponsor will be final and binding in all matters.

And hilariously:

Quote:
(b) Sweepstakes. Each completed Achievement will automatically provide the user with one (1) entry for the Sweepstakes drawing. To manually enter the Sweepstakes, each eligible entrant must print his or her name, address, city, state, country, postal code, email address, Steam account name, and telephone number, as well as the name of the Summer Camp Activity objective that the entry is for, on a self-addressed 4”x6” note card and mail the completed form to: Valve Corporation, P.O. Box 1688, Bellevue, WA 98009-1688. Note cards may be mailed as postcards or in envelopes. No e-mailed or faxed alternate entries are eligible. Facsimiles, photocopies or mechanical reproductions of entries will be void. An alternate entry must be postmarked during the Summer Sales period to be eligible for the Grand Prize Drawing. Alternate entries received after July 18, 2011 will not be eligible for the Sweepstakes. Each user may submit one alternative entry per Summer Camp Activity. Proof of sending or submitting an alternate entry is not proof of receipt of such alternate entry.

Lol what? manual entry?! That must be some sort of legal requirement, since it seems insane that anyone would enter the contest that way.

Yes, it's a legal requirement. If they don't observe certain niceties, it becomes either gambling or lottery, both of which are illegal.

Haha, so this isn't a lottery then? Cause you know, it pretty much is a lottery, albeit a free one. Crazy laws eh?

On a sidenote, just wanted to tell everyone that if there's a game you really want and it's off by, say, 30 or 50% during the 'normal' (ie not a daily but included in the general summer sale) sale...wait to buy it until the last day of the sales, because you never know if it'll feature in a daily sale at 90% discount or some such delightful insanity. :D Well, unless its price is already negligible, like 2 € or so. In that case I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

From the mouths of the unemployed. :P

So far I haven't seen any sales worth my time, though we're still on day 1, I suppose. Hopefully there's some good stuff coming up.

Updating my Steam wishlist top 10. Basically throwing out all games that I either don't really want anymore or that I can probably pick up on the cheap by now, maybe sooner than I thought. Stocking it with big, expensive yet-to-come-out titles or just recent ones that I wouldn't BUY, but wouldn't mind trying if I won them. :P Unfortunately, Steam hasn't got a page for games I look forward to such as

Rage
Skyrim
Men of War: Vietnam
Mass Effect 3
Batman: Arkham City
Trine 2

=(

There is a Dead Island page, though, just so you know.

Current 10 games on my wishlist...may give you guys ideas (like the Metro 2033 sequel, didn't even know it was on there)

Red Orchestra 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Metro Last Light
Silent Hunter V
Dead Island
Digital Combat Simulator: A-10C Warthog
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
Bulletstorm
Out of the Park Baseball (fun to learn to manage a new sport, and it's gotten good reviews)
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

And yeah, no sale for me today either yet. I'm interested in some stuff, but I either already own it or am not completely sure. Ah well.

Bought AvP and Bioshock 2 yesterday...the former because of a co-op defense mode with Satis and Peltz (we could use a fourth man if anyone's interested), the latter for the SP. First purchases this sale, heh.

I'm at 7-9 tickets after 3 days too...without buying anything new. I got too many games.

The defence grid ticket is not hard at all, basically in my opinion it is a simpler version of the story mission. I even managed to rank 885th on one of the maps which is quite good for a naab like me.

What did you use on shielded mobs? I just got defeated twice on the same mission, probably the fourth one that has the option to play without gun/cannon towers. You don't have the option to put a lot of towers close to eachother in the map, and they just seem virtually untouched by lasers/fire throwers which i mostly use.

Second time i put down some meteor towers, they work well against the shields, but are pretty slow and aren't of much use if the next wave consist of these cloaked guys.

Any tips are welcome :D

*update: tried again, this time the final enemy ran away with my last cristal with only a drop of health, aargh
getting there though

Hehe, you have to go with temporal, tesla, laser and meteors. Forget fire.

The idea is to make zones where the aliens are constantly under slow effect, dont upgrade lasers past mk2 unless you got resources to spare. Make sure your meteors have lots of coverage, not only by radius but look at the road as well.

Temporals must be mk2 at least, teslas mk2 and mk3. Make sure mk3s are at crossroads or places with heavy traffic and constant slow. The teslas mk3 fire through 4 opponents so its very deadly.

Temp: mk2
Lasers: mk2
Teslas: mk2/mk3
Meteors: can be mk1/mk2 if you go for mk3 which is ultra expensive make sure its got loads of coverage.

And when all else fails, fire the orbital :D Take a screen of the map and post it here, ill show you have to defend it.

I got the achievement now, perhaps i should finish story mode as well, since 'fire the orbital' doesn't ring a bell :D

These last few posts encouraged me to reinstall the game and beat the challenge. :) Did it. I also spent my tickets I'd accumulated so far on more maps for the game, and on Alien Breed 2. I'm not sure I care about anything else in the prize list.

Playing it again after a while for the achievement made me realise i probably should play it some more, at least till i finish the game.

Not sure what i'll get with the tickets, not much i care for i think.

new sales are out. Not bad, imo. I think I'm going to pick up Singularity, Alpha Protocol and Trine. Actually tempted a bit by frozen synapse as well.
