Got a new phone yesterday with Mr. Satis. He both got the Evo 4G phone by HTC. The battery is not known for long life but.... so far I am really enjoying it. This was a trade from my old Iphone. My Evo is much faster.

Is that one of those smart phones?

I recently got a new phone too, a 6700:

Quite basic in all honesty. I only got it cos my 6500 screen kept cracking:

The HTC evo 4g is the headlining phone for Sprint, similar to how the iPhone 4 is the headliner for AT&T.

I believe it's got a 1ghz processor, it runs Android (2.1 right now, 2.2 "coming"), etc etc. It also supports WiMax 4g, which is available in Dallas. So that means really fast internet. I installed a tethering app today that'll let me connect it to my laptop via USB and give me internet access. With WiMax, the speed will be broadband level, so I basically now have free broadband anywhere that has 4g, and slower internet anywhere that supports 3g.

I'm very, very happy. Way better than my treo was.

I've got that 6500 too derf. It's a piece of shit. On mine, the keys have fallen off... I had to paste them back on.
I've ordered an HTC Desire. Looks similar to your new phone Satis.

Haha, you guys...if I didn't have such a big dick I would have developed phone envy from reading this thread. :P

I'm still using my second phone in...5+ years? Must be about something.

http://www.phonehouse.be/store/nl/mobil ... -1661.html

Look at the price and the list of options it doesn't have. It's all red.

Internet and all those fancy options aren't worth the money for the extremely rare event that you need to check something while you're not at a PC. If you're a travelling businessman, sure, but all of us spend the majority of our professional (and a good part of our personal) time at or near a terminal.

I'm curious, what do you guys even use your phones for other than calling and txting? :?:

Post Re: Phones!
I play games on my phone, but I also use it for internet access on a regular basis. Sure, at home or at work I have a pc, but not anywhere else. I'll use it to find a place to go eat, or price-compare products, or get product reviews before buying. I'll use it to get directions/addresses. I think you don't realize how handy a high-end phone can be because you've never had one. The first cell I ever got has no features at all and was just for calling. Over the years I've slowly come to appreciate what it means to have all that stuff at your fingertips.

And now with tethering, I have internet for my laptop anywhere in the US.

Mm, I see. You may have a point, but otoh I don't feel like I'm missing out compared to my friends who do have such a phone. I check out small maps of the area before actually going to a place I haven't been (plus I use public transport and bike/feet) so I rarely need a GPS, I make extensive price comparisons at home before going to stores, am not on any social websites etc.

Finding exact addresses andd phone numbers for when you need to make a quick reservation or place an order does seem helpful though. Still, I know most of the city centre and stores/restaurant by heart. That's one of the adverse perks of public transport, redundancy - you cover a lot of ground you don't necessarily need to cover to get to where you are but it does give you a better idea of how everything connects. I also have the phone numbers of 5+ of my fav restaurants in my phone to fall back on. :)

What kind of games are we talking about? Like gameboy color quality? Cause that sounds kinda neat. :)

All in all, like I said, I can see the advantages if you're out and about in strange cities and countries a lot, but other than that it's just a little early planning vs. on the spot planning. At least that's how it sounds.

Since I'm able to get lost in my own back pocket, navigation on my phone would be quite nice. I also use my phone as an mp3 player. But this will be my first phone with internet, so we'll see.

oh yea, good point... I have Pandora on my phone now, so I have music anywhere. It comes with an 8GB microSD card (I think that's the form factor), which of course is upgradeable to whatever. As for the games, you have a 1ghz processor and somewhere around 512MB of RAM, with a graphics card capable of putting out 720p video. So the game quality is pretty good. I haven't used the HDMI out, so I don't know for sure, but wouldn't be surprised if you could actually output your games to an external monitor and use the phone as the gamepad. Would be neat. :)

Gamespot actually has a section on Android games:
http://www.gamespot.com/android/games.h ... es=popular

You should be able to check out some screen shots. The screen is 4.3" diagonal, which is big for a phone but pretty small for anything else, so please keep it in mind while looking at the screenies.

Post Re: Phones!
I use the web features on my phone constantly while out. Every week I go out with a few people for breakfast and usually shopping or something like a garden/museum. I find when we are in an area and someone says I need to go to X place to return this. We go sure and go there. Then we will have someone else say they want to go to Y place. I then do search to see where the closest one to X area I can find. Then while we are buying something at Y area I will then do a coupon search for whatever store. 9 times out of 10 I find a coupon the store will take from my phone which saves me or any other in the group cash. One of the ladies in the group is the mother of Satis. She is a smart lady but not very much into technology so, she would have difficulty with that if she had the options on her phone.

I text constantly (well not like the teenagers of today but more like 10-15 times a day) with my girlfriends to keep in touch of the little things. Sure I could do that with another phone but I like my full keyboard and the other features.

I personally get freaked out a bit by large crowds of people. I get clausterphobic. I find if I have the internet or a game it helps keep me distracted so I am more comfortable. So, at concerts, between sets I browse the web or play games on my phone.

Now my new phone has a camcorder. Come on who would not appreciate that at a concert or when you are watching some idiot do something you know they are about to fail at?

Overall I love my new phone and I feel I actively use the additional features. I actually find I can travel much lighter without needing my laptop, Nintendo DS, Camera, Camcorder, etc. with everything in my phone with good quality. I still will probably bring my underwater camera because I can't get my phone wet yet, but someday I bet they fix that issue too.

Post Re: Phones!
Hehe, well it seems that the phones are mostly used as a sort of GPS/to get around/get to places/get directions from the reactions here. Some of the other options are nice, though. Games in particular...taking pictures or filming stuff seems kind of redundant given the fact that the times you really NEED to tape something are rare, and if you want to film something you're still better off with an actual camcorder or camera. :) Once all the secondary functions reach an acceptable level in their respective branches (without resulting in a monstrously expensive phone) I may change my mind though. Call me crazy, but 400-500€ for a phone is just way way out there. I can't afford such extravanganza if I want to save money. Keep in mind that I a) live alone, b) pay rent (alone) and c) am not an engineer or software engineer. All these things should tell you that I have to be careful with money.

Also, I have a solid spatial awareness and rarely get lost. I'm a city cat and know my way around, as do most of my friends. And I only go shopping for food. :P So the GPS and map functions are lost on me.

Meh...I think the bottom line is...I can't really afford a shiny big phone. And I don't think I really need it. So the sum is pretty easy. :)

Post Re: Phones!
phones are priced differently in the US. We give up some freedom by signing to 2 year contracts, but gain majorly reduced prices. Our phones were $200 each. Of course, the monthly costs are extravagant, but there's not much I can do about that.

There's lots of integrated social web stuff I know you love, Ox. You can twitter and update your flickr account and keep up with facebook all from your mobile! I know you love that!

Yes we have that too... I'll pay 27 euro's a month (170 minutes or 340 sms and 1024/128 kbps internet) for two years but get my HTC Desire for "free". And after two years I'll blackmail my provider for the newest phone.

Heh that seems very cheap - I think Satis and I pay more along the lines of $180 a month for our two phones now. We have not gotten the first bill since the switch so no telling for sure but I am betting it will be that or more. Plus they always charge you to switch your phones too. I think that will be about $40 a phone X 2 which is $80 on this first bill. :x
