Bah, mp3 players are sooo 20th century. I have a phone that can play mp3's. Sure, it doesn't have enough storage to keep me happy on a trans-Atlantic flight, but for daily commute it's plenty. So get yourself a reasonably modern phone Ox, they're free with a reasonable subscription service, and you won't look like a caveman anymore when you call someone. Time to let go of that 6100.

Heh I'm like gadget retarded at times and even I have a phone that plays like 14 gigs of music stored and then other music applications such as pandora and youtube. Then I have separate MP3 players because they were tiny and easy to toss into my gym bag. Funny thing is I usually end up taking my phone with me instead though because I like to have it with me should an emergency arise.

As for public transport (I actually had this conversation with Satis' family over breakfast this morning) his sister and I just don't feel safe on public transport at least that we have here. Too many people we don't know the intentions of. Plus both her and I have some bad luck with crazy people trying to feel them up/jack off to them / etc.

I'll stick to my car even if the repairs etc. are making me crazy.

For the record his sister used to live in New York and used the subways system there and felt way safer than she does with the public transport we have here.

I goddamn hate gadgetry sometimes. The iPod nano I bought was a tragedy in usability. Seriously, now they make them with cameras... wtf?! A zillion functions and a battery time of 37 seconds.

iPod shuffle ftw! It doesn't even have a screen! 4 buttons, enough space and battery time to keep you going. Still can't remember the last time I charged mine.

For me a mobil phone needs 2 functions:

- i have to be able to call people and be available for others
- i have to be able to send text messages (sms).

That's about it. No way i'm paying more than 100 euro for a lot of stuff i really don't need. Or will use.

So if Shiny is gadget retarded, i don't want to know what that makes me. :)

I'm slightly particular about my mobile phone. Needs to be smallish, quick to get around the different functions (not like a 0.1s delay, that drives me mental) and it needs an ok-ish camera for general snappy taking.

I'm expecting Ox's post to be something along the lines of: "What's a cellphone? I communicate by thumping the ground and pissing on people".

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, but I use my phone much more extensively than you fools. Phone calls and SMS are certainly high on my priority list, but so is the camera, file storage, and ability to browse the internet. My current phone doesn't work very well for many of those functions, but when I upgrade in the next 6 months or so, I'll be transitioning to a phone that can handle those items better. 2 megapixel camera FTL, ridiculously tiny storage capacity FTL, tiny screen FTL.. the next one will be a full touch screen (maybe with a slide out QWERTY) for more viewable area. Speed is important, but size is less so... it's the functionality that's more important to me.

I have a treo 750 for anyone that cares.

As for MP3 player, I have a Creative Zen, but I only use it when working out. I primarily use my laptop with Pandora to listen to music, since I carry it to work and school anyway. Not that I listen to music in class.

LOL. Why do I always give people that impression?! Because it's true, I guess. My old dinosaur cellphone (a Nokia 3310) finally started to fail last year, so I had to buy a new one. I just went to the phone store and bought the cheapest Nokia model they had in stock. It's this one now: Nokia 3500.

That older model of mine could only hold 20 text messages at a time. I am pretty much like J, as long as it calls (receives calls, I rarely call people) and can send text messages I'm ok...so the criteria automatically move up to reliability (Nokia) and cheapness.

I actually have considered getting a bells-and-whistles phone, but the only reason I'd ever do that is to have continuous internet access which would cost me tons of money. I don't think you guys realize how bad Belgian cellphone and internet fares are...to illustrate: I pay about 50 € a month for a DSL connection of about 18 Mbps download/1.2 Mbps upload and a 60 gig bandwidth cap. You can just about guess how much accessing the internet over a cellphone will cost then. :P

(also, I'm on a "plus" deal with my ISP. The "standard" deal, ie what 90% of all users have, is 12/1 Mbps with a 25 gig download limit. And costs 40 € a month. Yup, we get assraped pretty hard.)

Hehe, yeah, I got a Dutch friend who's a civil servant (Rijkswaterstaat) and she's got 2 (!) Blackberries: one for work and one personal one. Wtf?

The idea of my job giving me a Blackberry is just flat out hilarious. Not gonna happen in a million years (and her 'level' and experience corresponds to mine).

I had an Iphone. For the record I hate apple. But, it had the largest screen and storage on a phone out when I purchased my phone. I may go to a blackberry next but I am amazed at how often I use the other features the phone offers. I often check my email throughout the day even while shopping. I text very often. When I am out and need to go by a particular store I use the web to check if there is a closer store to where I am currently at so I don't have to drive all over town. I use it to check movie times when friends meet for lunch and we decide we want to see a show but want to know how many cocktails to have before the show so we are not waiting bored.

I didn't think I would really use that stuff when I bought the phone as I was coming from a damn basic phone, but I was surprised I did use them.

With that said my "unlimited" data package means I can use it pretty much all I want without having to pay more. And unfortunately with an Iphone I have to pay for the data package to even get the phone.

I feel like it makes me slightly more efficient as I can check email while others are driving and so I spend less time at home checking email. Now if I could have Java equipped it would be even better as I would be able to purchase concert tickets online. I hate when I forget that a show goes on sale, remember while running errands then go home to purchase the tickets only to find out they are now sold out. :(

I just found out that you can buy beer in the cafetaria here at work. Gotta love federal employment! :D

I remember drinking a beer during lunch in one of my previous jobs where I worked together with Dutch colleagues, who generally have a much more Anglo-Saxon business culture as opposed to the Belgian culture of 'bon-vivants' - think milk and sandwiches for lunch. My direct boss was sitting at the table and looked baffled that I would do such a thing (order a beer), the more with him at the table. I honestly didn't see what the problem was, in Belgium no one is surprised when you drink a beer or glass of wine for lunch even when at work. Slight culture clash. :)

I once even visited the customs office of the Antwerp port and found the civil servant there with a glass of trappist (heavy dark beer) on his desk, while working. That was over the line, even imho, but funny regardless.

Are you kidding? I'd love to have a kegerator in my desk. I'd be drunk every day. Honestly, I couldn't get drunk... my job requires too much thinking. A beer every few hours, though... yea, totally could deal with that. Kinda take the edge off, y'know? :)

I have actually had a job in the past where we would drink while at work. We kept wine, margaritas, etc. in the office fridge. However, I worked insane hours there so that was mainly why. We would go with the partner of the firm to lunch and have margaritas.

The rule of thumb I have been told in business is that if you are at lunch and the boss orders a drink you are free to follow. However, if they do not then you shouldn't. And never should you get even tipsy while on a business lunch.

Carlsberg Staff Strike Over Beer At Work Ban

Warehouse staff at brewing giant Carlsberg have staged a second day of walkouts in protest at a company decision to limit beer drinking at work to lunch breaks. The strike in Denmark follows a move last week to change the rules for on-site drinking, the world's fourth-largest brewer said.

Carlsberg spokesman Jens Bekke told Sky News: "We think times have changed and we need an alcohol policy that is accepted by society - 93% of Danish companies have an alcohol policy.

"There has been free beer, water and soft drinks everywhere. (On Wednesday), beers were removed from all refrigerators. The only place you can get a beer in future is in the canteen, at lunch."

Mr Bekke said Carlsberg drivers claim a "very old right" to have up to three beers per day outside lunch hours.

The warehouse workers say they share that entitlement - a claim the brewer disputes.

"Because of that, the warehouse staff went on strike yesterday, with other staff striking in sympathy," Mr Bekke said.

As many as 800 workers walked out on Wednesday, with 250 still on strike on Thursday.

Mr Bekke said the Confederation of Danish Industry and trade union 3F had agreed the strike was illegal and would impose fines on workers.

Mr Bekke said although the walkout would halt shipments from Copenhagen for the day and cause delays in the rest of the country, he expected the financial effect of the strike to be minor.

He added that Carlsberg's trucks have alcohol locks so drivers would not be able to drink too much and drive.
