Alright, so the story so far:

Babel Research and What’s in the Box? are unrelated.

The images from the sound files, when arranged in order, give a 32-character sequence. This can be decrypted as an MD5 sequence, which yields a telephone number in Washington state. Dialling this number with a modem (or emulation software) gives you a login screen. This screen says that GlaDOS is at version 3.11, leading many to speculate that Gabe will make an announcement on March 11th, on which day he is speaking at GDC. Entering the username and password “backup” (derived from morse code heard on the in-game radios), a number of ASCII-art images are streamed to your screen before closing the connection. So far, images seem to be of 1) Gabe 2)Dog, vortigaunts, or some other androids 3) Turrets from Aperture 4)Hearts and companion cubes. Apart from obviously being references to HL and Portal, nothing of significance has otherwise come from these images.

It's cool that Valve makes leaking info such a rat-race, but what kind of people spend their day deciphering all that stuff?

yea, that's kinda bizarre. But hey, to each their own. These freaks that spend their days deciphering computer game marketing will be the ones to figure out how to put a virus into an alien mothership.

Portal was updated again yesterday!

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/03 ... l-updates/

Here's a complete overview of all that's been going on so far

http://kotaku.com/5484157/valves-portal ... re-science

The amount of work that must have gone into this so far must be staggering. March 11th, new orange box (for PC and Mac) with Portal 2, Episode 3 and a MP game - I called it. :P

EDIT: I found this interesting and true, from the comment thread:

Quote:
Imagine if other companies looked like Valve. If “marketing” in games meant providing extra content, actually giving things to the community to buy them over and not lazy tech-demo trailers with cheesey voices or lists of stats about how many guns/polygons the new release will have.
This whole idea of a game being an ongoing exchange of ideas between the developer and the player that extends before and after release…how long do we have to wait for this to catch on?

I mean its not manditory or anything but its damned fun and I’m sure it ships units.

(Reply)
Dominic White says: March 4, 2010 at 12:34 amExactly. They’ve turned waiting for the new game INTO a game. And a damn clever and detailed one at that. Most marketing assumes the audience are idiots. This relies on them being seriously smart people. I know I could never have figured out even half of this by myself, but the fans went and tore the problems apart in a matter of hours.

He's got a point. Valve treats its customers as sensible, intelligent people (even when clearly, not all of them ARE sensible intelligent people) instead of retarded pirates. Cfr. how they invited the leaders of the boycott movement against L4D2 over to their offices and just showed them what they were doing, winning them over on the spot.

I'm not sure I'm cool with them changing an existing game. I mean, what they did with Portal and the final video doesn't really change the game any, but the idea of them going into my game and changing it makes me a bit uncomfortable. What's to stop them (or another publisher) from going into a game I love and changing some core gameplay mecahnic? OR removing a level? I think adding content is cool... but altering existing content isn't far from removing content, and I'm not so cool with that.

On the other hand, the marketing they're doing is pretty cool. It's nice to see people going so far into it and making it so interesting. I'm just nervous about them altering my games without my consent.

Omg, they changed the formula game. Why can't they just leave it the way it was?

:demon:

Sorry, i couldn't resist. ;) But yeah, all they really changed so far is make it possible to take a wireless radio with you in Portal and slightly adjust the ending (or should I say added to it). I think they might "revert" the game to its original state too after the marketing campaign is over, but who knows. I agree that it might be creating an unwanted precedent, but Valve never really let us down so far so I'm holding out judgement for now. :)

they allow other company's DRM to exist within their own DRM. to me that's a let down. Another let down is that you can't gift a game to somebody else after you're done playing it. Or resell your game. Or 'cash out' and get a DRM-free version of your game and remove it from Steam entirely.

But yes, I understand what you're saying. For the most part, with some exceptions, Valve has been good.

Well I think there will be more to come than just the announcement of Portal 2 at the GDC in a few days, this is just a part of the large announcement. More mystery hints have been dropped in/via portal since it was announced, so...

Also...get ready to jizz yourself Derfmeister (once you get intarwebz again)

Quote:
Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game's two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.
