nuclear missile silo as a home
I've always wanted to turn an old nuclear missile silo into a house. Besides being a great way to live through the zombie apocalypse, you get a good chunk of land, an easy-to-heat and cool home (of tremendous size), and something that's seriously built to last. Shiny agrees with me on this one.
Anyway, I found it interesting that Wired ran an article on nuclear silos and a guy that's renovating one.

Cool stuff. $500,000 is a bit pricey for me, though... especially considering how money would need to be sunk into it to make it truly livable. Still, neat stuff. If/when I finally become very wealthy, I'll definitely have a nuclear silo home in the desert.

That's pretty freakin' cool.
I dunno if you remember who would buy that but ages back (about 10 years?) there was an old radar bunker on there for several million dollars, including the land and all the underground structures!

Totally not familiar with that site. But that's pretty awesome... if I had the cash, I'd totally get a radar bunker with underground bunkers. I think just the idea of owning a hardened military bunker gets my giddy. Something like NORAD would be perfect.

I doesn't even need to be a military bunker or missile silo for me. Any sort of fortified a-bomb shelter in the middle of a desert or tundra plain is fine for me. Give me food and a woman and I'll be just fine. A woman or the internet.

I wouldn't expect there to be much of an internet left after the apocalypse. So, definitely a woman. Maybe some games. Though better make sure none of them have DRM.

It was pretty cool, the radar station was still functional though required engineering work. The jeep in the picture did not come with the auction.
Decided to do some googling, check this out

Can't you just buy a hummer? Or is the armor plating you're worried about re: the apocalypse?

I want a military hummer. The civilian version is a completely different vehicle, especially now. The original civilian model was 'close', but I want the real, military version.. diesel powered, loud, powerful.

You'd also need a tanker truck with driver to follow you around and refuel you every 10 kilometres.

bah, you're just jealous because I'm an American and thus deserve the right to pollute the planet as much as I want.

You Yankees just have no taste. If you want to pollute the planet, do it in something cool.

haha...the difference is, I can actually afford a humvee. I can't afford one of those monsters unless I sold all my organs...and what fun would driving one be without any organs?
