Well it all went incredibly smoothly and I'm now typing to you from a super new sexy computer. No chance to try out games or anything yet but I'm loving Windows 7 so far (particularly how fast it installed from scratch) and my ratings on there are all above 7 except the data access from my hard drive which is only a 5.3. But I intend to upgrade the hard drive anyway so soon that will kick ass too.

Unfortunately it's going to be a couple of days before I can properly get on with gaming so can't test out the graphics yet. I look forward to it though! I also need to mess around moving my DVD drive down; until I upgrade my hard drive I'm stuck with one SATA, one IDE and this stupid motherboard only has one IDE port. Unfortunately with my DVD drive at the top of the tower, it doesn't reach my back up hard drive so tomorrow I'll have to move all the bays around and have the DVD halfway down the tower. But that's only a temporary problem at least.

cool. When you get a chance, post all the hardware you decided on. I'd say to post some benchmarks too, but I don't know what you would post. 3dMark is a tad old.

Heh will do, gonna give Dragon Age a whirl tomorrow evening I think. While I'm here though you might be able to help me. Where do I change it so Windows stops saving things as .JPG and instead does it lowercase .jpg etc? I have this problem every time I do a clean install and I never remember how to fix it!

You mean for ms paint? I didn't even know you could change that. I just type the full name out manually with a lower case extension.

Well it's usually in paint I have that problem though just checked and it's fine. This is in the new 'Snip' feature. Oh well I'll figure it out.

Anyway as far as the hardware goes I pretty much stuck to the previous links.
GTS 250 I figured that would be more than enough of an upgrade for me and it wasn't worth spending the extra money on the 260 on my budget

The crossfire mobo on closer inspection the other one I looked at that was geared for nvidia didn't support the RAM I'd chosen.

Core i5 again the extra for an i7 didn't seem justified to me and it's still nicely new enough to cope with the next few years.

2 x 2Gb DDR3 RAM cheapest set of 4Gb I found and comes with its own heatsink on each stick which is always good.

cool, sounds like you've got a rockin' rig. Congrats. Another month and a half and I'll hopefully be following in your footsteps... well, at least partially.

Me too! In past when I've done an upgrade I've kinda of picked at it instead of doing a full blown upgrade. This time If I cant get everything I want in this pc Im just going to wait until I can. Some features I want

dual video cards
water cooling
SSD HD's
small case

Heh...I got my tax refund already, 1500 €. Not outrageous, but nothing to sneeze at either. Won't be using it for a pc any time soon though.

Congrats Pev! I'll stop making fun of your pc now. Enjoy the high-end gaming while it lasts, which is ever too short. ;)

1500 euros isn't bad, though I realize money goes further here as far as computer parts are concerned. I'm expecting around $2k.

I want core i7, an SSD (not RAID, there's no RAID that supports TRIM), 6GB of RAM.... I guess that's the major part. Currently I'm eyeballing the 160GB Intel G2 SSD... it's hovering around $550 on newegg. :? That's a ton of money, but I think it'll be worth it. Everything else is the usual price/performance tradeoff. If I have enough cash left over from the build, I'll be getting a 24" LCD monitor.

Thanks Ox, unfortunately what you say is true and I'm sure in about 2 days my pc won't be good enough any more ;) hehe. You could build a beast with that 1500 euros...

Satis that's sounding nice! Damn you, I don't want to be jealous of anyone else's pc for a while! :P

First time I ever heard of TRIM..

Quote:
Such a configuration would be "RAID 0"-like as it allows performance to double when reading from both drives, and natively supports TRIM (even thought my Intel drives do not, but future firmware may emerge).

Intel doesnt support TRIM?
