Not on a whim no, but I personally had almost half of all possible NPC's die or turn on me (and then die). Depending on the choices you make and how they feel about them, most of them have a chance of attacking you at a given time. :o

I'm pretty sure the duration of a poison is standard 60 seconds, regardless of the skill of the maker or who uses it. Which means it's always a good idea to give melee characters at least one rank in poison making, allowing them to apply poisons and use grenade flasks. My main was/is actually a master poison maker, and produces grenades all the time for my party to help in the tougher fights (my main tanks and the rest pile on the grenades).

Also, concentrated magebane...recipe is very expensive and only a master poisoner can make it, but it's SO incredibly powerful against tough spellcasters. Drains their mana relatively quickly, leaving them near powerless.

Also, nice article on the narrative of DA and how it's the closest thing to a real dramatic literature experience we've had in games so far (I agree).

http://greywardens.com/2009/11/article- ... narrative/

Quote:
But, what I hope to present to the ether world of the Internet is a look at some of the unifying themes of Dragon Age from a couple of different perspectives – a literary narrative viewpoint, and a gameplay/technology and societal viewpoint.

Quote:
Geoffrey Rockwell, a cross-appointed professor in the humanities computing program and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Alberta in Canada, says it’s time to stop looking at computer games like they’re separate from the rest of human entertainment.

"There’s a lot of anxiety around computer games".

He said and added …

"You get psychologists doing these studies about whether computer games make children more violent, when what we should be doing is developing a language similar to the critical discourse we have around literature."

We’ve developed a very sophisticated, critical discourse for understanding how novels work, understanding their traditions, how they’re made. We look at some of the finest work of human imagination, and computer games are very sophisticated works of human imagination.

For me, Dragon Age is the pinnacle of what’s possible in this arena at this time.

And it’s all about the narrative.

There are a lot of games out there with great stories, stories where the player gets to live out that hero fantasy of saving the world, kicking the bad guy in the ass and riding off into the sunset with the girl (or boy) of their dreams.

Where Dragon Age takes this and turns it on its head is by allowing for the possibility of some really, and I mean really, sad endings.
That’s what real literature does, people. That’s what the great films are about.

Sixty-five years after Casablanca hit the big screen, people still remember, people still obsess, the audience still hopes that somehow, some way, Bogart just might get on that plane this time. But, would we remember if he’d flown away with Ingrid Bergman? Why are Shakespeare’s tragedies the ones that lodge in our minds and hearts?

I saw my first sad film at the age of eight. Having been raised, like most children of my generation, on the saccharin happy endings of the Wonderful World of Disney, I was in for a shock when I sat through Yasha-ga-ike or Demon Pond. As the heroes sank, dead, beneath the water of their flooded village, I waited – waited – for the magic to happen that would bring them back to life, for the fairy godmother, for the miracle, whatever … and all I got was the credits rolling up the screen.

And that is exactly how I felt as the credits rolled on my first play through of Dragon Age.

Art, real art, has a place for human pain, for heartbreak. By very definition the interactivity of video game allows for a depth of connection to that emotion greater than words on a page, or even colourful images on a screen, because it’s your character, your adventure, your heartbreak.

How very delicious.

I agree on everything else but:

Its hardly a pinnacle of well anything :D. I think there are a few more games he needs to play.

But i dont hate it, i think its a game defenately worth playing because even if i find the main plot to be too american and cliche, the combat variety and tactics are for the intelligent man. While all the blood and gore is there to attract the ignorant man, i did find most of the strategic game enjoyable.

As for next we should draw some paralleels with Mass Effect because the similiarities do exist. Grey Warden vs Spectre, Denerim vs The Citadel. The Geth vs The Darkspawn. :D

I never really thought of it that way, but yeah, now you mention it, those are some pretty sharp parallels (not so much on the citadel as on the other stuff imho though). :)

I guess some extent of similarity is bound to come from the stock of epic literature/storytelling anyway.

Seems like J and Satis both gave in to the lure of Dragon Age's epic awesomeness on that steam sale. Coolio. :)

Satis went with a Dalish Elf he told me, no idea about J but I'm guessing a Human Noble rogue? Or City Elf? ;)

One thing though...you guys both bought the standard edition, while the deluxe edition was on the same sale for about 3€ less. Not that it's a huge deal, the main difference is that Warden's Keep isn't included in your bundle (and some items that are less important). It's a cool sidequest but nothing earthshattering, and not really worth the 10 bucks they're asking for it seperately.

Pretty lame of steam to direct you to the standard edition from that sales page, though. I can imagine you would have splurged the extra 3 bucks on the deluxe edition if you knew.

Also, you guys will need to install this tiny mod for optimum enjoyment:

http://social.bioware.com/project/463/

Adds a permanent storage chest in your party's camp. You'll thank me, seriously. :)

Haha, well it seems im not quite through with tormenting Dragon Age just quite yet. Check out the screen i captured from Mass Effect (PC). While the maker could be quite the common phrase in english language i couldnt help myself :D

hehe. It's not an entirely uncommon way of referring to a generic deity (it's also used in Dune and Star Wars), but entertaining regardless.

Just dropping in with a quick note that I won't be updating on DA:O much at all for a while. I've picked up Assassins Creed 2 as I knew I would and figured I'll finish that before I play more DA; after all I know that will be the shorter game and get me back to DA faster than vice versa.
