 World in Conflict
Well, this game is out. It's an RTS, basically, set in the recent past (1988 I think) in which the USSR decided to invade rather than collapse. At least some of it is fought on American soil.
It looks interesting to me. I can't seem to shake my RTS fetish. But not yet. Gamespot gave it a 9.5 and, though other reviewers weren't so nice, no one really wiped it too bad. 9.3 from IGN also.

I got this game and played it yesterday. Omg, it's cool. It's just another RTS, of course, but the first level was set in Seattle. So there are people and vehicles all over the place and a completely destructible environment. Plus the effects look pretty cool. The bombs blowing up make me flinch. :p
What's cool though, imo, is the story. I'm only a few missions into it but the storyline's doing very well so far. I damned near got pwnt in the last mission I did until the battleship showed up. I assume that's the demo mission you're talking about Peltz.

I read about it on Gamespot. Basically the company was purchased, blah blah blah, but now the expansion is coming out. Only, it's bundled with the original game and will cost $50. So I'm not buying it. Not after having purchased the original collector's edition. To me, it just seems like the new owners are trying to rape the franchise for every dollar before shutting the whole thing down. That doesn't bode well for the quality.
This should be a $20 stand-alone expansion ($30 at most), not $50 so I can rebuy something I already bought. Annoying bastards.

Oh, that sucks. You sure they won't release a seperate expansion?
I'm not complaining: I have yet to play the full original game. So I'm ok with this deal.

Check out Gamespot's preview section on Soviet Assault... it says it in there. I'd link you but I can't get there from here. I'm hoping it goes stand-lone eventually... it really was a good game. I'm just afraid the expansion will suck.

Satis, perhaps this really cool trailer can change your mind?

Probably not - I wouldn't pay twice for (half) the same game either. But I'm sure as hell gonna get in on this fun. Looks awesome!

Satis, you can buy the expansion seperately on steam if you have the steam version of the original World in Conflict. Not sure if you have it though...

No, I got a boxed version of the collector's edition, with the chunk of Berlin wall and everything. I don't regret the original purchase, but if the expansion doesn't come separately and inexpensively, they're not getting any more money from me.

Well, Gamespot absolutely trashed Soviet Assault. 4.5.

So basically, the game is a great deal if you don't already own the original at 30 bucks, but the expansion is too short to justify a 20 bucks price? Lame. =(
Btw, am I the only one who's seeing a surge of overpriced expansions? RA3's (only available online) expansion Uprising didn't get a good reception either. Let's hope this isn't an outgrowth of the DLC age

I think the whole concept of DLC was stupid, to be honest. All attempts by the industry to take as little work as possible and make money off of it. I mean, what about the DLC for empire: total war? The option to get 6 freakin' units for like $10? What a total ripoff. Traditionally that kind of stuff would be available for free, or part of a full-blown expansion with new factions and gameplay mechanics. It'd be akin to me offering an FPS with 3 guns, and you can pay $5 more per gun for more guns.
