 Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
ok...so why the hell did I pick up this game? I read some stellar reviews, so I figured I'd use some of my Christmas bounty to pick up a game. The graphics were, supposedly, ungodly. And they are.
So, to make a long story short, it's a pretty good game. Mostly FPS, though there's some first person sneaker thrown in, plus a bit of rpgish (no levelling, but kinda minor quests and talking with people). Overall the gameplay was pretty good. Very difficult at times, even on medium. The save system is checkpoint based, which can be VERY irritating when you die at the same sport each time. The save system is probably my biggest bitch. Voice acting is good to excellent. This also covers how Vinnie got his shiny eyes, by the way. And that's a neat effect.
So, here're some screenies.

Read some very positive reviews too, and indeed the character models are very stunning.

Very impressive, everything. Especially the tattoes and the reflective armor suit. My gaming mag reviewed it at 88%, which is close to some of the best ratings of the year. I must say I was very sceptic prior to that review and what you just posted, I mean, franchise-games are usually erhm, lacking. In a lot.
Don't know much about the Riddick thing, even if I like SF. I saw the first movie, never the second. Care to enlighten me on the broad storyline, and how he got his eyes fixed? Or would you recommend finding out myself by watching the movies/playing the game because they are superb?

the game has nothing to do with the movie, so don't worry about it. All you really need to know is that Riddick is a criminal.
The game was worth the time, imo. No multiplayer and I beat it in 2 days, so that's a bit of a downer. On the other hand, I played it alot in those 2 days, so take that how you will.
The hand-to-hand combat is pretty nifty, though I ended up just mashing buttons for the most part. When you get punched, you feel it...the whole world shifts. There was one part where I was driving a mech-thing with a damage stabilizer, so the view seriously swung back and forth. It was horrible. I nearly got sick it was so bad.

Haha...I've heard that from ppl playing HL2, too. Apparently you can get sick from playing a (vivid) game. Never had any problems myself, but then again I don't suffer the least from car/sea/other sickness. If that's to the point.
No multiplayer is really a problem these days, if you ask me. Nevermind the two days, an experienced gamer like ourselves can finish most shooters on two days. (barring FarCry maybe) And Riddick's a criminal? OMG, SPOILER! lol.

Well it appears that riddick's chronicles is about to get a sequel in '09.

I sometimes think of buying Butcher's Bay...I love the Riddick movies (esp. Pitch Black) but I never played it, and Satis liked it so much so...think it's still worth it? Don't want to miss anything when I'm playing the sequel.

I say pick it up... it was a fun game and with modern hardware I'm sure you could crank those graphics to max. I hope the next game in the installment is as good. I don't see why it wouldn't be... the first wasn't a big enough hit to justify selling it off to the Chinese for crappy game development.

Well the trailer looks good, well apart from the lipsync.

Just read a preview on gamespot about it. Looks like it's a remake of escape from butcher bay, plus additional content (to the tune of basically another game). So if you're redoing the first game anyway, I'd say don't worry about picking up the original. It'd probably get boring replaying it again, even if it's in a fresh engine and 'remastered' or whatever.

A remake eh? Thanks for the heads-up, saves me a few bucks on Butcher's Bay...besides, it probably would have bombed on my vista 64 bit anyway. Good thing I still have my laptop for some heavy duty budget gaming.
