I recently saw 28 days later again - that might explain the connection. Great movie, but it gets a bit lame towards the end when the guy goes rambo and kills an entire batallion of soldiers with his bare hands, in between surviving zombie-infested woods and saving the girls.

This is only really funny if you know Dutch, but still: the verb 'swaffelen' has been elected 'best Dutch neologism' for 2008...

The dictionary describes 'swaffelen' as 'letting the male genitalia swing free and purposely hitting an object with them', but in common speech the idea only really pertains to humiliating someone by hitting them in the face with your (flaccid) penis.

Sort of, but your penis makes a better weapon. It's a quite old word though, just not something serious media or a dictionary pick up fast.

My little brother uses it all the time. It's so lame it becomes funny. Only, he pronounces it "schwaffelen", probably because of the German origin of the word.

Anyway, here's a work I had to finish for the faculty so that they know I know (as if they didn't know that I actually knew it before they installed it for the first time) to use 3D Studio Max basics. The model was my own watch.

that's very good. Shiny and I are actually taking a 3d modelling class next semester, though I believe we'll be using Maya. I know building curves can be annoying... did it take long to make the watch links? And is the watch face actually 3d rendered or is it a bitmap slapped onto a flat surface?\

Regarding the captions on my images:

ITS: Official Handholders. ITS is the department I work for. It seems like half my job I end up walking people through how to do stuff they should already know how to do. IE, I have to hold their hand like a child. Hence the caption. Holding someone's hand through something is an English phrase meaning you're helping them through something.

Don't be a bitch: This started off as a play on 'Just do It' from Nike. 'Don't be a bitch' basically means 'Don't be afraid', but a bit more aggressive.

Anyway, hope that clarifies it. Also hope I didn't over-explain something. :p

I don't poke often the modeling stuff but I heard that in the future (if not even as we speak) differences between 3D Studio Max and Maya will become insignificant. I installed Maya only once or twice so I can't really be made to talk about it but take advice and, if possible, have conversation with a modeler pro to clarify whether you should learn one or another.

The watch... it took me about three hours to make it. And yeah, the face is a bitmap but not because I wanted it. This watch is simply a demonstration of this-and-that and not really an artwork that I enjoyed making. In this case the face is a bitmap because there was no better place to show some bump mapping. But if you ask me about my preference, I always relied on realistic geometry.


Perhaps majority of them is younger than yourself. Schooling system has gone pretty shitty everywhere lately. The last year, my students were asking me for the best way to prove some algorithm is correct (not many smart questions but.. whatever). This year some guys asked me wtf is a half-line. The hilarious part is that only ~50% of them got it after five minutes of drawing it, explaining it and defining it in different ways. Poor kids.

I dunno. I don't have the idea that kids are dumber/less educated than in my day, tbh. Maybe it's just hard for us to take a proper pov re: knowledge when we've got all this experience and gathered knowledge over them? You know, like when you're trying to explain something to someone that is SO natural to you that you get pissed off when they don't immediately understand (when you perhaps didn't either when you first learned it)?

I always have to make sure people are still following me when I'm on one of my rants. I tend to make shifts from one subject to another seemingly randomly and I talk pretty fast, apparently. Of course, in my head all the connections are made and make sense - but people don't see/hear everything I think. Ftl. And I might just be a little weird, too.

While I understand what that POV is about, I still fail to put it in context of a half-line. Man, those kids already have passed exams in two Maths and in the first math they did the non-simple analytical geometry stuff. So... having some of them being incapable to understand the concept of a half-line is quite weird at least, as if they totally failed at the choice of the faculty. The kids I had a year ago needed no explanation about such stuff.
