yea, Far Cry was unexpected. Half life was hyped, but worth it imo. Hell, Doom3 was hyped for years. Graphics were great, but the gameplay was kinda repetitive. HL2 could've been better but certainly wasn't a disappointment. Far Cry was great. :p
And Duke Nukem Forever pwns them all!

Ive just started playing this game and im finding it mediocre.
I dont know if its my short attention span (working alot these days), but im finding it hard to appreciate it. I think im into different things these days.

Original Doom series are far better than 3. 3 woulda been better if they'd basically truly just remade the original in better graphics, instead of taking the story, then changing the levels and gameplay.

I thought it was ok for a shooter. The hidden door opening behind you trick gets really old, though. Nothing really tremendously exciting, by any means. Some of the hellishness in later laters gets cool...hell itself looks pretty damned cool too.
But anyway, overall it's not that good a game. IMO, it's basically a technology demo for other companies wanting to buy the engine. I think Quake IV will be the first really fun Doom3 engine powered game.

I disagree, I thought Doom 3 was a great game. Yes it is linear and the hidden doors opening behind you gets old but thats doom. Thats how doom has always been.
Personally I loved the story about the teleporters, mad scientist, people hearing whispers, hell, etc.
I was way more interested in the Doom 3 story than the hl2 story. Maybe thats because I never played Hl1.
And as far as scare factor, Doom 3 takes the cake.

lol at first Doom didn't scare me at all. Then I got the odd bit where I jumped.
I love the game, simply coz i love the originals. Doom95 (Final Doom was its real name I think, but the version I had was called 95) is the first PC game I ever played. I do have to agree they went more for the "look at our amazing graphics" (which are pretty damn good really) but it did lose out on the gameplay of the originals.
I think the problem is that its more of an FPS now. That'll sound weird lol. But in a way the originals were too simple. You could go through most levels without killing a single enemy if you wanted. It was all about speed. You could pick it up for 10 minutes, then put it back down. It was a great little 'time killer' when you only had a short time spare.
Doom 3 requires time to play it. Otherwise you lose the mood, lose where you were going etc.
Actually I really should complete Doom3 at some point

Doom³ is scary, but very rarely the sort of scary I'm really into. You've got 'physical' fear (monsters popping up behind hidden doors and shit) and there's psychological fear. I prefer the latter...which isn't to say I don't enjoy a good cheap scare, but that wears off after a while.
A scary story, spooky setting, or atmosphere, those can carry a game much further. In Far Cry you had to constantly be on your six, which made for a strange mix: a paradise setting but dangerous shit. Especially the crack monkeys, god. It's like in Undying where you had howlers, small howling creatures that hunted in packs and could jump you from a large distance, taking a whole chunck of your health when they hit. It was pure, pure terror...they were supposed to be low-lvl cannon fodder, but dang. Everytime you heard the howling in-game you went into "fuck!" mode, took a health pack and reloaded your guns.
Erh...anyway. In HL2 it's more of a psychological terror too. The story is just better worked out, but that's subjective I guess. I won't deny that the flying/whispering skulls were cool and scary in Doom.
HL2 did kinda drop the ball in one aspect tho....the scariest setting of the game (Ravenholm) was for a large part totally not scary. The zombies are just way, waaay to slow and are more playtoys for the physics gun than fearsome opponents. Maybe it's cos I had HL1 under my belt, but I don't think that's it. It's only when the super-fast dog-zombies started climbing rainpipes that shit got scary.
I'm looking forward to Aftermath (the HL2 XP). If they fulfill their promise of putting the Source engine and Havok physics to the edge we're in for a great time. I'm thinking a classic expansion, hopefully with some answers about the Gman and the Combine this time.

Just finished Doom 3 (2 days of constant play). I can't really say it is my type of game. As you may have already experienced (now I speak in general), there are three basic things that make length of a game: the time you need to physically pass through it, the time you need to pass through the enemies and the time you need to solve the obligatory riddles. It is really shame that a really major part of the time in Doom 3 goes on the second. I like hard combat and exhausting dodging / hard shooting, but I found it rather annoying to have to deal with hard-to-kill monsters on very every corner of the game (speaking about the later levels).
One major effect that this causes: it LOWERS the fear. If you meet 10 monsters in a minute of walking through the levels, you will simply stop to fear them, regardless of how much horrible they sound or look. Much much much stronger horror effect you have when the player meets really superior monsters occasionally and is relatively powerless against them or even disarmed. Now when I read it... it seems to me like I like adventure type of FPS rather.
Interaction with characters is poor that it hardly can be poorer in Doom 3. Later you don't even have whom to communicate with (everyone's dead). Well, I suppose it is the way it should be.
Riddles - only the with 7 of 9 canisters in the delta labs 2a and a crane gave me some thought. I think even Duke Nukem would get higher rating by me.
What else.. corridors and rooms. Sometimes they are not that linear at all, but that are just very rare moments, which I liked.
That's all folks.

I'll agree, Doom 3's gameplay left alot to be desired. The graphics, however, were phenomenal. They're still very nice and it's been out for awhile now.
God I can't wait for Crysis.

What can I do when I am always a step behind all you guys. Several reasons causes this.
But now, that's new to me that Crysis has not been published yet.

hey, that's cool... we get to spend all our money so you don't have to. :p
Yea, Crysis is still not out. I think it's supposed to be soon... September or something. I'm just too lazy to look it up.
