I really am stumped. I'd sell the kid and get some new hardware. Or format the C drive and reinstall winblows.

If you click around in a body of text, does it highlight the text even though you are not dragging?
Have you tried a different mouse?

Have you tried unistalling the mouse from the device manager and then try to reinstall it?

Occasionally I was getting the same problem too. Shortcuts on the desktop just do not work. Starting some of them starts a new process that is supposed to be new window, but window is actually never shown. Here, the solution was restart. The process that is supposingly the cause of the problem was called "Proxy desktop" as it had always to be killed manually before windows can restart. If such a thing isn't supposed to exist, buggy spyware crap is possible too.
Now, the problem seems to be solved after win-reinstall, but I am not 100% sure about that yet. So much from me.

so...as pig said, if you single click once in text, let go of the mouse button, and tehn move the mouse, it highlights text?
In that case, you have a keyboard key stuck. Shift or ctrl or something. Shift I think. Check your keyboard. Try swapping the keyboard out if you have a spare...unfortuanetly it's not possible to boot without one. :p Well, not normally possible, at least.
This is why you need to have at least 2 computers, so you can swap out parts.

First try hitting the shift button 5 times. If that doesn't stop it, you need new hardware.

had a look but tbh i've no idea what i am looking for.. pressed shift 5 times and get the sticky keys thing come up, both shift keys seem to work ok when i type something in...if a shift key was stuck wouldn't all my typing come out in upper case?
not easy to test a new keyboard, this is cordless, so when i plug a normal one in it doesn't work
is a re-format a viable option or is that way to much? i know it wont prove if the hardware IS faulty but i guess it would prove that it isn't windows doing some twisted shit
getting jumpy now, haven't been able to game in like 3 days..

6 times turns sticky keys on. 5 times turns it off. If you got the prompt to turn it on, then that probably wasn't the problem. make sure it is off, and if that doesn't fix it, then it is probably nothing you can fix easily on the software side. Keyboards are less than $10 USD new, and even less if you go to some PC recycle place. It's always good to have a back up anyway. I would put in a diff keyboard first, and then consider reformatting. The time you spend going to the store is less than you would spend reformatting and reinstalling.
