Aight, I finally had a relax day to look into the stuff a little more and see what was going on.
I unplug the pc, open the case,, check for the chassis fan wiring and...find that the power connector of the damn thing ISN'T CONNECTED. WTF? God knows how or why...I have this feeling they forgot to re-connect it after messing with the wires when I brought the pc in for repairs a few months ago (with the chipset fan). It's very silent so I never noticed the difference, and my pc is sitting on the floor under a desk so I don't tend to stick my head down there.
Anyway, I connect it to the power supply and surely enough, the chassis fan works. yay! I also used a light brush to clear the (many) dust on and in my monster copper CPU fan. It never ceases to amaze me how much dust those things suck up.
So I reboot, everything seems to be running fine. I haven't had the time to work something more heat-generating of an application like a game but I'll get to that later today I'm sure. Fingers crossed I won't get any crashes anymore and that it was 'just' the heat building up inside the case and messing with the memory or the gfx card. I'm gonna delete some programs I don't use anymore and do a defrag first of course...all for Oblivion.
Remarks:
-like I said, the fan must have been unplugged for a while now and I only recently had the crashes happening...that sounds kinda fishy. I mean if it was really ausing overheating issues, wouldn't I have noticed a while ago instead of two crashes over a short period of time after a month or three?
-my power supply fan isn't turning yet. It doesn't feel very hot and it's a badass power supply (500 watt, maybe even 550, can't remember) so I reckon it might only work when it's really being pushed. I should probably look that up.

it's unlikely a case fan not running would cause your computer to do what you're reporting. It is possible that the high heat (caused by a dead case fan) was enough to cause some of your components to fry....
but...do you have an case fans blowing into the case? If you do, the chance of that would be damned near zero also. If your power supply is overheating though (due to no fan) that could cause problems... but I'm only speculating.

Thats just fuckin out of order. I would have gone ballistic at those tards working at the repair shop. Maybe even consider a drive-by fire-bombing of their store considering potentially what they could have done to your computer. Have you considered this might actually be due to where youre positioning your case? You said that you tuck it away under the desk (or summin). Not a good idea, a) because you probably never hoover under your desk, b) because there is lots of accumulation down there, and c) airflow issues.
Not sure if all PSU fans are suppsed to turn always or not, so i would run a temp check to see if its normal or not.

Yeah, you're right...however, I still fall under warranty with those guys for a while so it doesn't piss me off THAT much. I mean, I could have a failing piece of hardware replaced at no cost, normally speaking. They didn't act ghey with the failing mobo chipset fan either, but then that is a common problem with asus mobo's lately it seems.
Also a good point @ my pc's setup...it's on a rug, and rugs obviously create a lot of dust. I should put it on some elevated space but I just can't fit it in anywhere right now. It's a big-ass server case too so...
@ Satis
This is my fan setup:
-small local chipset and gpu fans, not affecting rest of the case
-PSU fan which doesn't affect rest of the case either (duh)
-big-ass chassis fan at the back of the case sucking out air (which didn't work up until a few hours ago)
-CPU cooler which is the massive copper thing that also blows air over most other parts of the case.
Other than that, no fans...so the CPU cooler must have provided some relief to the rest of the stuff inside the case but other than that the heat must have been trapped. There are ventilation areas at the front and side of the case tho, where a fan could be installed.
Still haven't played a game yet cos i reorganized and defragged first...i'll get to that. From what I can feel the case is a lot cooler already just browsing and typing tho.

Separate question: Your Zalman, i hear theyre quite noisy, but they have named some of their products 'Ultra Quiet'. Which is true?

It's quite noisy tbh I can hear if my pc is on or not from a room away (providing the doors are open of course), heh.
But it does a good job adjusting to the heat of the CPU, it audibly increases/decreases speed depending on what I'm doing. Like when I'm playing GW it tends to work hard (GW sucks up CPU? dunno) but as soon as I alt-tab into windows it settles down again. So that's nice.
And it looks awesome, of course.

Which model Zalman do you have? I was just looking at them for a possible far-future upgrade, and i was liking very much the idea of em. But i dont want a noisy one. If theres a quiet one, i'd splash on that one.

They should have some specific silent ones too, or check Tom's hardware for a comparative review of coolers and their noise. I'm too lazy to really search, but this is a benchmark from a while ago which features my cooler
