The same case was with older nvidia cards, for instance ge3 ti500 64mb had better fps than the few first geforce 4 series 128mb.

Well Moley boy now has problems.
His computer gets to the bit just after the Windows loading screen (with the green loading bar), then as it turns to the blue 'welcome' window, it stays on for a couple of seconds then dies. Always at that same point. It just keeps restarting round and round. When it goes off, the base unit 'clicks'.
Now he did have it all up and working. Between the last successful restart and now, the only things he's changed are installing Zone Alarm. Up until then it was successful.
Anyone have any clues what could be causing this? Since it's always at the same point, we're thinking it must be software related.
edit: he's gotten it to boot into safe mode ok, so he's gonna try uninstalling the firewall. should be ok in theory, i have that firewall, but you never know.
edit 2: well now it works... very strange.

not so strange.
Zone alarm makes changes to alot of base files in windows. winsocks and other stuff, probably network drivers. Something it did, your copy of windows did not like. Did not like to the point the computer flipped out and reset itself.
Something to check to make this kind of thing less annoying in the future.
right click my computer, go to properties
go to advanced
click settings under startup and recovery
there's a box that reads 'automatically restart'. UNCHECK THAT
at least now you'll get errors. That may not have done much here, but trust me, it's aggravating if you have that checked.
Anyway, Mole did exactly the right thing by booting into safe mode and uninstalling the software that appears to have caused the issue. Good job.

This is some odd fucking shit.
I install ZoneAlarm, and my PC crashes at the welcome screen. I boot in to safe mode to remove it, reboot, and it works just fine.
Tried again, this time just the firewall in stead of the full antivirus, and it crashes just the same.

Firewalls are evil, I tell ya!!
And yeah, I'll probably get my ass hacked somewhere down the line. Probably by one of you guys. Not like I have anything interesting anyway...Satis might be interested in my porn folders, however. Think of all the porn that would be lost if he rooted my box! (I love saying that, even tho I have no idea wtf it means)
Glad to see your machine is up and running Moleman....it's time I took you guys to school in GW....with my lvl 3 warrior/necro.

Lol, going to install that now.
Anyway, I posted at the same time as Satis, thanks for the advice. Ox gave me that advice prolly about half a year ago! *me brain no good* For tonight, I am going to leave that firewall for a while.
However, when I install it, it tells me that I don't have permision to install it, or some such bull shit. I check, I'm the administrator.
Anything else?

and while we're on it, i hate his frigging comp. Now i can't see him on the network. Well, I see his comp, but i can't access it and can't see the shared folder. However he can see and access my shared folder. *sigh*

does he have file and print sharing installed? Make sure he shares out a folder for you.
Also, make sure that he has a valid computer name, you're both in the same workgroup, and make sure the computer description field is blank. Hmmm...can't think of much else. Networking in XP should be real easy...I've had issues networking different versions of windows, but never with XP talking to XP.
btw, this is Satis at school, too lazy to log in.
As for Zone Alarm, fuckit. Firewalls on computers are stupid. You have a router...use it as your firewall. Don't set yourself as DMZ and leave all port forwarding off. That's more effective than a software firewall.
Think of it like this.....with a router, the packet never reaches your computer.
With a software firewall, the 'malicious packet' hits your network card, gets interpreted there, then steps up who knows how many layers of the OSI model before the firewall even examines it. The fact it's even touched your computer means it's gotten further than it ought to. Software firewalls are stupid. That is all.
And finally, Ox. Would you like me to explain rooting a box?

You know us and networking
But yes. We both re-ran the network wizard, allowing file and printer sharing. I even made him right-click/properties his shared folder to make sure it was shared.
If i go to the workgroup, then it shows me his computer. Which I can't access. If i go to my network places, it just shows me my folder. If mole goes to his network places, he can see his and mine, and can access both. Both computers are named the same as they were before.
It's not a huge problem; if we need to transfer stuff we can just put it in my folder, but it would be nice to have it working again

Did either one of you use satis's tweak guide, in that case either one of you has network processes stopped.
Time to hit the lecture, business law anyone??
