I meant the SLI comment to Ox...he seemed to imply that the ATI crossfire is the only SLI solution....probably just me, though.
Anyway...sheesh...first off, you're one dyslexic mofo. It's KV8 and AN8. As for the differences.
KV8 -
Socket 754
for AMD64 processors
VIA K8T800 Pro chipset
AN8 -
Socket 939
For AthlonFX and Athlon64 processors
NVIDIA nForce4 chipset

Heh, I didn't mean to imply that, no. I know that SLI and Crossfire are different solutions offered by Nvidia and Ati. (and that crossfire has the better features of the two)
But anyway, thanks for the assistance. I'll be putting the order up as soon as those dudes running the shop come back from holidays (bastards closing at the worst possible time). Power to the people!

So why does asus list them as A8N and K8V on their webpage and im pretty sure when my computer starts up it also displays A8N.
EDIT: Sorry i see we talked about different manufacturers. AN8 and KV8 belong to ABIT and A8N and K8V belong to Asus.

...go to Asus.com and find me a motherboard called A8N and K8V. The fact there were two AMD socket boards called AN8 and KV8 made me think you'd bungled the name. If not I see a few possibilities.
1. You're a crackhead
2. You're actually using Azuz or some other motherboard that's probably a cheap knockoff of Asus.
3. You've bought an 'Asus' board from a black market motherboard ring that steals rejected harddrives from taiwanese dump sites and sells them.
4. The world is about to explode and you're diverting my attention from that fact.
5. In 28 minutes I'm going home.
7. There was no 6.
8. Arnold Schwarzenegger secretly admires my writing style and is about to appoint me as interior minister of Californian allegiance and cooperation.
9. ?
10. Profit!

So, I ordered my new pc (case+mobo+cpu+cooler+hd+floppy) yesterday evening and it's being put together now. At least, that's what those bastards at the shop are supposed to be doing.
As I've stated before, I'm recycling my RAM (2 512 sticks), graphics card (9600pro) and cd/dvd drives. Well, I'll probably end up changing one of the latter with a DVD/RW but nevermind that.
I've had a problem with this pc for quite some time now, but I never bothered about it because I can do anything except playing (demanding) games on it. So, I get slooow boot (the 'bar' you see during windows load crawls), and when I'm in windows I get this very weird 'lag'. I can't describe it any differently...like when writing a downloaded file to my Hdisk, the process goes
fast-slooow-fast-sloow-done.
Also get a lag on video and audio sometimes. Anyway, like I said, it's no problem operating the pc for everyday chores, it's just when I try to install large games or try to play them that I get problems.
It's not my ram, I used both sticks seperately and things were just the same. Think it could be my gfx card? Afaik, dying gfx cards go out with a bang or make stripes appear all over your screen, right?
I'm just afraid that one of the few parts I wanna recycle might prove to be fried. I was gonna replace it anyway somewhere down the line, but i'd prefer to keep it a few more months. So...
reply to the monsterpost bitches!

It's not your graphics card. Graphics cards don't usually see much use when you're copying files. I'm thinking hard drive issues or O/S issues....probably the O/S. Video/audio lag points, again, at O/S.
Or...possibly...virus/trojan/spyware. Regardless, I don't think it's something you'll need to worrya bout on your new machine. Do you have a router yet? You really should get one if you don't...I believe someone did an experiment recently and put a new install of XP on the net. Within like 9 minutes, it was infected with something.

lol @ 9 minutes. But nope, I don't have a router....I'm pretty sure it's not a virus or spyware tho.
I figured the HD or the OS, so thanks for your thoughts. The HD is a serious candidate btw, given that when things went wrong for the first time (failure to boot twice, then slow boot and this started) the HD seemed to be stuck in a 'loop'; kept making the same little sound over and over again.
Meh, I'm just glad it doesn't sound like the gfx card.

was the hard drive doing a clicking noise?
If so, that's the head beating itself to death against the casing, I believe. Means that drive has about had it. If you get it working again, back up, because that whore is going to crap out on you something fierce.

Yeah I backed up first thing after that happened, so that's mostly covered.
As for clicking...it's kinda hard to go into specific sounds in written text. But anyway, I think you could call it clicking, in a way. It was more of a very short, slightly scraping sound that kept repeating itself. We'll see...I might get an oppurtunity to play around with parts to determine the cause once I get the other pc in here.
