Post Oblivion
Since there wasn't really a topic for this incredible-looking game (there was one for screenshots about it but hey) I decided to create an expectation thread. :)

I've been reading up on this game a lot lately (pretty much coordinating my upgrading around a potential release during the holidays even), and it just seems to look/sound better and better with every interview I read.

The graphics, the gameplay, new features, the Radiant AI, physics...it looks like the whole package. If it proves to be half as good as it looks a lot of people will disappear from the face of the earth for a few months, methinks. :)

Here are some good, long interviews

linkie
linko

Some excerpts on their Radiant AI (ie largely non-scripted AI)

Quote:
While in town, you can store your horse in the stables, and pick it up when you’re ready to go. NPCs can use horses as well. If you’re not careful, they may even steal yours!

Quote:
We have a lot of control over the system through the use of NPC stats and AI packages. Packages are basically bundles of instructions that the NPC executes under conditions we specify. The dynamic nature of the system allows us to be as specific or generic with those instructions as we want. So we can tell a guy to go shopping at a specific hour and leave it at that. So he will set off toward the shop, and any number of things could happen – he might have a conversation with a passer-by. He might browse the shop items for a while. In rare cases, he might see a friend of his under attack from a monster, and run to help. We can override any of these behaviours whenever we see fit, so it allows for a great deal of variety in their behaviours.

Quote:
GS: Considering that the game is being developed to have a huge world and characters that act more or less independently, have there been any surprising moments for you so far in the game?

TH: Oh jeez, too many. Just yesterday I saw some skeletons pick up leftover weapons that were lying around so they could kill me easier. It was one of those, "Where's he going? Oh crap," moments.

I could quote pretty much everything in the interviews, but I'll leave it at this. hehe. I also love that they implemented a lot of Daggerfall stuff in the game, like mounts and buying houses and even fast travel. Feel free to ask me any questions as I've read just about all the info there is on the game so far...spares you the effort to go look up stuff yourself.

hehe @ Peltz...I hope it's because Bethesda will manage to deliver a bug-free product for once, but that's a distant illusion. :)

Bj...it's 1000% certain that it's a standalone game ;) Check out the screens, it's hard to confuse it with Morrowind anymore tbh.

Ooh, another cool quote btw:

[quote]Could you detail for us how the forests in the game were constructed, and how this was integrated into the rest of the game?

It’s one of those things we’ve always wanted to do in a game – full real-time forests for you to explore. Our tech for creating forests is something we spent a long time on. We’re combining procedural generation of landscape (based on its soil type and years of erosion), trees (based on species and random growth clustering), and grass (base on regional patterns) to create some really amazing areas. Combine this with full canopy shadows from the trees and it really takes you to another place.

As far as gameplay – a forest really is one of the richest environments you could explore. The dynamic compass helps you find things because the first thing we experience with the forest was “I’m lost.â€

You really didn't hear much about Oblivion before? :o You weren't kidding when you said you were too busy lately, hehehe. Anyway, just glad that I could bring you the news of Oblivion in time. ;)

There's no official word on the systems reqs yet (Bethesda is still streamlining the game for best performance so they don't know for sure), but it's been hinted several times that they are going to be HIGH. Not really a surprise when you look at the screens, either. ;)

Quote:
GCM: Oblivion is scheduled to be released for the Xbox 360 and high end PC’s. Will it be a launch title for the 360? What sort or system requirements will be needed in order to run Oblivion from a PC?

Todd Howard: We’re shooting for the holidays, but can’t give you an exact date yet. As far as system specs for the PC… you know us! If you want the full-on graphics, expect to buy the best thing you can when the game comes out. We plan on having it run on as many systems as possible, but it’s too early to say how far we can drop the spec right now. We do have that as a goal – having it run on a wider variety of systems than Morrowind did.

Anyway, for more screen check out the elder scrolls site itself

And from the FAQ:

Quote:
Are those real screenshots or are they renders?
All the screenshots are 100% authentic screenshots taken while playing the game.

Seeing those screenshots makes me feel so sad... Amazing graphics like that means hardware upgrades. And as every modern game runs on medium/low graphs, I'm going to need a lot :? Bethesda should make a deal with some hardware manufacturers, don't think I'm the only one who needs some massive upgrades. It's better than getting a new console every 3 year I suppose :? Not sure yet if I'll pick this one up. The upgrades are financially the biggest disadvantage.

I do have the money on my savings account, so if it really turns out to be the best gaming experience in ages (we'll have to see about that) I might really go nuts and spend a lot of cash. But I just might not either, I'm pretty cheap when it comes down to it. In the end I'm standing in the shop and think 'nah, this is really too expensive'. 3

Erh, anyway, it's both BJ. :) (was the same in Morrowind too) You can choose between third and first person. In Morrowind it most of the time came down to first, because that's the most involving pov as you can imagine.

lol@ captain picard ;)

We should start a Satis hate group, with his low-tax wages. :P

Anyway, as a part of my job as game-hyper (I wish I got paid for that =( ), read this little piece on thieving in Oblivion.

ooh, that sounds pretty good. I have to say, though I typically hate sneaking games, thief was pretty damned good. I'm so looking forward to oblivion.
