well, I stopped playing Germania. I got really bored. I was in debt and my empire was rebelling, of course. I can forecast the next 20 hours of gameplay:

provinces rebel
my armies slowly get whithered down
I move my capital to Rome since cities are geographically closer
I lose all the provinces on the fringes of my empire and pull my remaining armies back toward home
After some massacring and passification, my empire has shrunk to half the size
I end up with 2-3 full, highly experienced armies by the time my bank account goes positive
once I've built up some cash, I strike out again to reconquer the world
when I get within 5-8 provinces of beating the game, the same shit happens again

So, I started an Egyptian campaign instead. I love archers, so I figured I'd check em out. Good stuff. I'm regularly annihilating enemy armies using just my archers. Love it. :)

Haha...sounds about right@ Germania. Hope you'll have more fun with the Gyppos...haven't played much over here because i started playing Warcraft III+Frozen Throne 2 years overdue. It's one of those games you have lying around but never play, you know...but I'l enjoying it tremendously, despite the slightly outdated gfx. (still looks ok tho)

I'll be back with the Britons, you betcha. Btw, chariot archers on elite lvl own all Satis. They're a nightmare. I had 4 silver-wing chariot archers in my Briton main army and they completely massacred full cohorts of heavy infantry, or even general's bodyguard that's on the run. (!) I guess the Egyptian ones won't be any less efective. :)

yea, I'm looking forward to when I get my empire up and running all the way.

On a negative note, I'm like 20 turns into the game and Alexandria is ALREADY rebelling. 28k people and I haven't even built all the crap yet. Egyptians breed like rabbits, I swear.

haha...I bet there's not much else to do in the desert, even though for someone like me having constant sex in the scorching heat is more of a certainty to up the death rates than anything else. Just make sure you NEVER lose Memphis. Without the bonuses for happiness at Egyptian cities that the pyramids give you you're pretty much fucked. :)

I like the way he reacts to this abuse, yet knows at the same time, it's inevitable.

lol, we love franny. :P

Haven't had a chance to play much. Really looking forward to an army of elite chariot archers, though. :P

Picked this game up again with my new copmuter using huge army-size.

It definately adds difficulty to the game.

I was fighting against the Gauls early in the game. They did something petty, like sieges my northern city, then left immediately. I dod what anyone would. Build an army to teach them a lesson! I put a 1 star general in command and a load of Principes and Equites (best at that time). When i got there, i fought the battle and god beaten badly. I was shi=ocked because id never been beaten this badly using large army size, but the real reason for the defeat was multiple.

I was against "Zigorcix The Cunning", a 9 star Gaul general and faction heir. I found this out (conveniently) after the battle. :)

For some reason, using huge army-size seems as if barbarian units are at a greater advantage in numbers. They easily wrapped around me.

P.s. My 1 star general also died in the battle (not so valiantly, more out of naaivity).

Now im against the Egyptians and although im winning against them, i cant help the heavy losses and drastic changes in tactics. Those fucking chariots! Fire arrows dont scare them. The only true weapon against them is the Hoplite. And the Romans cant make them in sufficient numbers!!!!!

Yeah, you're right. Same thing but the other way around for small unit groups, like arcani or berserkers: on low unit setting they are less effective than on huge, because 6-12 units are pwned immideately by backstabbing wrappers. Oh, also profiting from huge unit setting: hoplites.

Other 'crap' with it is manoeuvering in a city. Try getting a complete chort of war elephants or chariots through a city, it's awful. :( Hoplites, on the other hand.... Also, with low unit setting you can defend your walls better...simply because you can put more cohorts on there.

hehehe...enjoy. 8-) And you're not even talking about chariot archers apparently, as you name hoplites as best counter-weapon. Use (preferrably experienced) archers protected by heavy infantry, or use heavy cavalry. Cavalry will suffer bad losses when engaging chariots, true, but there really aren't much better means to stop them and their blitz tactics.

Apparently there were some screens released of the upcoming Xp pack for RTW, called Barbarian Invasions

http://www.rome1.de/cms/index.php

check it.

1 - it's called RTW: Barbarian Invasion
2 - it is set in the years 364 to 476 AD, with the Roman empire split into East and West
3 - you can play as either "wing" of the Roman empire and start with a fully formed empire. Your object is simple - survive! The barabarian hordes and lots of rebellions to fend off it says.
4 - There are several barbarian campaigns - Vandals, Saxons and Huns are named
5 - There is a rival empire - the Sassanid from Persia
6 - the Huns have no settlements at all and start with "15 large armies" and have to sweep across the map
7 - there are lots of new units and tactics: a type of x-bow unit, Hun lancers, barbarian Golden Band (elite berserkers), mobile chariot artillery, the Shiltrom (a kind of barabarian phalanx), a shield wal formation, morale boosting druids and priests are all mentioned
8 - there will be spectacular night time battles where morale of the defenders will be lower at the start (tho attackers' morale can drop it seems if they don't break through!)
9 - river battles will allow some light units (inc cavalry!) to SWIM across and avoid "death at the bridge" nonsense of RTW

Note, this isn't confirmed by the creative assembly yet...but I suppose the E3 will give us more info anyway. Still, nice screens, even if it's just some random mod. ;)
