OMG, I'm the only one so far who noticed the HL2 release?! Anyway, I bought (!) it on its release date, tuesday...but I only started playing it today because of an overload of uni/social/financial obligations, and because I wanted to be able to play it properly if I came around to it. So, been on it a few hours now and freaking hell, sheer class! And I'm not even in chapter 2 yet (there are loads apparently)!
In order to ensure best performance I did tune down all graphics options, so it's not looking super-mega-duper-spectacular, but very good nonetheless. I can only imagine how great everything looks with all guhns blazing. I might pick up some more ram (only 512 atm) so I can at least move up a notch in the graphics quality, too.
I've been running from the Combine forces for a while now, and been racing around on a sewer-racing something which is really neat. But dudes (and gals); there's detail in there...like, freakishly much. And multiple ways of solving many things, but most importantly: the physics are, well, unseen. This is the first FPS where physics are so dynamic and useful..and the AI won't hesitate to use them, either. Headcrab zombies are extremly strong but also extremely slooow, as you might remember from HL1..but they're back with a vengeance, they now will pick up any nerby heavy object when you're out of reach and hurl it towards you...I was happily fragging this guy from 2 feet away with my sissie pistol (saving ammo for the rest), and suddenly he grabs a barrel, smashes it unto my face and I fall down about 5 meters deep...cost me a good 50HP in total.
But it's back, and it's as great as it ever was so far..the HL1 feel is there. (which is nothing but good) Also some cool music in here...in certain areas/situations you'll get pumping technio tracks boosting your adrenaline. Worked for me, at least.
I'll post some more pics later on...here's some teaser material though. Does anyone else have it yet?

Unless someone is going to buy me a kick ass computer for my birthday, i'm not expecting to get Half-Life for christmas.
So please pour some more salt in my wounds by posting more pics.

Hehe, will do..
@ BJ, yeah there are some on your side too, and they call me the Free-man. Hehe. City 17 is spooky...very lifeless. And all that propoganda playing on the walls doesn't help either.

The last pic from the first serie of pic looks like a Carryall from Dune.
As you might have noticed, I'm no big fan of the original, so I'm likely not gonna buy it (I'm not a too big fan of shooters anyway).

I'll buy it some day. Only after I get bored of swg. :p Looks pretty good, though, and I've heard nothing but good things about it. Nice to see they didn't screw it up.

Wow, I heard good and bad things about it. Like no multiplayer. Only CS source. And you have to log into steam to play SP and steam is jacked up.

Yea, no MP isn't too big a deal for me. Except for some games, FPS MP bores me. There are a few notable exceptions, of course. I did hear about the steam issues, though. Good call there. That should stabilize pretty quickly, though, I think. Kinda like when America's Army launched and they had to triple the number of servers. :p

About the MP, i've heard rumors about a surprise: "There's going to be a special treat near launch or soon after for those who are upset that Counter-Strike Source is the only multiplayer offered out of the box. I'd hate to ruin the surprise but let's just say traditionalists will be happy even if it's just one map at first. Physics Cannon!"
Oh and i also read that Valve has put a warez-version on the net, if you fire it up they will block your steam account or something. To quote Valve: "We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off."

OMG, physics cannon!! While I was playing I made myself a promise: I will never play another FPS that doesn't have a physics cannon! That promise will get broken (duh), but just to say that it is exceedingly cool and useful. I just finished Ravenholm, and the things I've been throwing around...sawblades, meat hooks, dressers, radiators, motor blocks, wooden planks, barrels...there's thing like throwing a motor block on somebody.
and if that's not enough, you can also pull supplies and ammo towards you when you're standing away from it. Or fend off headcrabs temporarily. Plus, you'll need to think 'physics' to get through the game, because a lot of puzzles are based around them.
I'll add some pics of the gravity gun here. And yeah, steam is a little bitch and you need to sign on on the net before you can play HL2. I think it's stupid, but bleh. As long as I can play HL2. But yes, steam is about the only drawback on HL2. All the rest has been superb up till now. And ravenholm rocked ass. Another thing i've been paying attention too is the facial animations of the NPC's...it's outstanding, and you see them roll eyes at eachother and stuff. Very very cool.

I think the gravity guns pushes objects in the real world around. So, it's a cannon of physics. That's my guess, at least. Push stuff around, beat people to death with every day objects....good, wholesome fun.

You know it baby...right click= lift up item when near, drag slowly towards you when far (not TOO far). Then another right click simple drops it, and left click propels it forward with a lot of strength. Perfect for smashing faces with. A full can of paint to the head always hurts. (not to mention a dresser) A left click without having picked up an object will give a short burst of energy, good for quickly pushing barrels away or push open doors that have been boarded up.

Ok, I waited a bit cos I wanted this to be "official", but here I go:
Wow, wow, fuck, god, jesus, hell, HALF-LIFE 2 ROCKS! It's the best shooter I ever played hands-down, and a serious candidate for game of the year. It shreds Doom³ apart, and I feel sorry for any other game in the near future that will have to try and reach the standard of Half-Life 2. This morning I'd been playing it a bit more (nearing the end of the game I think) and got on the bus to uni, and on there I back-tracked everything I'd been doing in the game in the past 2 days...and I was amazed. It all came back at me and I felt great thinking of it. This might all sound very corny, but believe me, the feel and atmosphere...awesome. Everything is just right, and the gravity gun still owns. (owns even more towards the end, hehe)
So, buy it and you won't regret it. You'll thank me. it takes you from racing levels to a scary village, from an outdoors beach-scenario over an abandoned prison-dungeon crawl-type thing to an all-out urban warfare, wowee....and the level I'm in now is incredible too, in terms of design. I've never spend more than 5 minutes thinking of a "puzzle" to get past somewhere, so the solutions are usually very logical. (and often make use of the physics) The game started out kinda 'slow' for a seasoned gamer like me (and you guys/girls), but when it got up and running there was no stopping. You actually feel like you're Gordon Freeman, the way it pulls you into the game.
Oh, and you might have noticed that the texture detial was pretty crappy in some of the previous screens I posted. Turns out I over-reacted at the start of the game that I and could play the game easily on medium detial overall, so I only changed it after a while. And it makes quite a difference, I must say...I'll be sure to restart a game just to do the first part on a decent graphics lvl. Oh, and I've turned up évery option in some parts just to see what it would be like...it was unplayable, of course, but it looked incredible. I took a screen of something on full options, might post that one.
Sorry for the rambling, but I desperately need to convince everyone to play HL2 And to make sure I won't be spoiling too much for you, hehe. I'll post pics later tonight. And if any of our residents who didn't play the original need a brief recap of the events there in order to connect more with the the storyline in HL2, give a shout.
