It looks great indeed, i suppose you can zoom in on the action of your units, only doubt i have if it's still playable. Haven't played that many games like this, but i always wanted a good overview, zooming in made me lose it most of the time.

Looks good, but do you HAVE to play with the Romans? I'd like to play with a band of savage Gauls, and rip straight thru those nice army lines
From Caesar's De Bello Gallico:
"Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae"
or
"Of all these, the Belgians are the bravest" (he's talking about his opponents in battle)
w00t lol

Another sign that there have been huge migrations of people between the Roman age and now.

he he yeh. No but, i dont believe you haveto play as the Romans. Being from the total war series i think there should be no reason why you shouldnt be able to play as Celts, Babylonians, Germanians, Egyptians, Carthaginians...

Nope, I do have dibs on it, but I'm still playing Evil Genius (and of course BG2 and fifa 98'). And I still got Dawn of War lining up too, with R:TW. And Hl2 and Vampire 2: bloodlines are coming. Too few time, too many games. And to think we were begging for something good a few months ago.

Bleh, I typed this before, but Satis' crappy server went down for maintenance.
Anyhoo, in short: great game, cool battles, great mix of turnbased civ-type game and action strategy. Haven't seen any HUGE battles yet, but done some small ones. Had the obligatory tactical blunder now and then; like mistakingly sending my elite cavalry to take care of a bunch of hoplites (aka spearmen) in phalanx. For anyone who wonders what a phalanx looks like:
You get the picture: cavalry seriously decimated, making my infantry a shooting target for enemy missile attacks.
Can't wait for the really big fights, and to overthrow the senate. I feel like playing diplomatic tho. Chose the Scipii faction (few land to start with, but wealthy and strong)
Sorry for the telegram-style..couldn't be bothered again.

You can be any of the races. Its out in US. The lan gameing center my friend owns has it installed and he says everyone plays it. The game, before it was released as a game, was used by the History channel to simulate wars.

After playing it for a while now I'm giving it a huge thumbs up. It's a great game...combines my love for TBS and RTS in a brilliant manner. Also cool how they work in Roman history, heh.
On the contrary of what most ppl might think, I am not a military superpower. Instead i chose to invest in trade and infrasctructure, and have become the richest faction in the known world. (i.e. europe, N-africa and middle east) I just pay off most enemy attackers, or bribe provinces into my faction. Which doesn't always work however. Egypt is besieging one of my cities (Cartagho) as we speak, with a freaking big army. My territory is relatively limited (the whole of Sicily, a part of Italy and N-Africa) but Sicily's central maritime position combined with my trade focus make for a powerful and hard to conquer power center.
I'm off, gonna go try to fend those egyptian scumbags off. With my super wooden pallisade.

Dunno for sure. 200 BC or something? You got the game yet Derf?
Meanwhile I've exterminated the Egyptian empire. I now rule the entire of North Africa, the Middle East and the Nile Delta. And somewhat above that too. Plus sicily, crete and cyprus. I have formidable armies and economy, but a crapload of logistic problems. The thing is: a large part of my empire (most notably the Nile Delta etc.) is a freaking long way from my capital (Messana, on Sicily) so they suffer a HUGE penalty because of that. Making them hard to control, cos they riot a lot etc. Even with low taxes, daily gladiatoral games, a good governer, complete sewers/aquaduct/plumbing they tend to do so. And the fact that they're huge cities of about 30k+ doesn't help either. I'm thinking of either moving my capital to something a tad more centralized than Messana, or just moving it to Memphis alltogether. Because that's where I hold my base of power anyway. We'll see.
I recruited some war elephants in Cartaghe and the Nile Delta, too. It's only 2 groups of some 5 elephants, but those things positivily RIP apart infantry. (cost a lot though, 4000 denarii. That's about the price of 5 Preatorian Cohorts, the 2nd best infantry unit in the game) Added a pic of me recruiting war elephants a long time ago, so nevermind the map.
Next on the list of objectives is to break the backbone of the greek cities' forces. Another Roman fanction chased them out of greece itself, so they'r enow hanging around in Turkey and parthia; making my life miserable. Usually with armies of 500 freaking hoplites. They're slow ad you can pick off a lot of them with missile weapons, but when they get to you army....
Also, started a custom battle for fun: some 20 elite armored war elephants plus 10 groups of cataphracts (heavily armored cavalry); versus an army with nothing but light infantry. It was sheer joy to see the elephants smash around the little ppl.
Erh, enough whining. Come on, anybody else must be playing this super game? (and Derf was SO right about this going to own...i humby submit apologies to you hehe )
