 Codec's
seing as my uni network is a untapped source of awesome moives, it's really pissing me off that most of them i can't watch because i apparently don't have the right codecs and they always seem to fail to download in Windows Media player
any idea where i can manually download some random codecs, that might possibly run some of these movies in Media Player, cause at the moment, i have no idea what i'm actually looking for...

yeah i've got divx though, and quicktime and realplayer. still some movies though, like minority report which i wanted to watch but don't have the right codex
and i would use kazaa but on our uni network it's massively bandwidth limited so you barely get a file transfer rate so i gave up on that ages ago...
anyone one know of a website or something which i can get them from?

I use this codec: http://www.megacodecpack.com/
I still have to get across a movie file that doesn't play in WMP with that codec pack.

I use the k-lite codec pack and have no issues.

Yup, that's the same, only with Real and Quicktime alternative in it. What I don't understand is why they don't just make a Realplayer and Quicktime codec for WMP, instead of Media Player Classic.

I have a small problem, when i try to watch trailers at www.gametrailers.com, the movies become all scrambled and stuff, you know like old tvs show static (new ones just turn the screen blue) and about a minute from that my rig freezes totally. I think its got something to do with the codecs but im not sure. Any ideas.
The same stuff happens with vids on my HDD so its not a net related incident.

yea, sounds like a codec issue. do you have a codec pack of some sort? If you do, uninstall it and download a new one from the net. I use the k-lite mega codec pack typically... google will find it for you.
If that fails, it could be a video driver problem... just reinstall your graphics drivers in that case. If you can still game ok, that won't be it, though.

Now it takes only longer for the problem to appear. I can game just fine, i played Bioshock for 10h in row the other day. Its just videos. And it doesnt matter if its Media player classic or WMP, both crash the same.

Have you tried VLC? It can play most formats and is available in a portable version for your USB stick.
