'k, i built a pc yesterday, went suprisingly well, installed pro, chipset drivers, catalyst, xp updates, blah. all good

installed zonealarm pro, then downloaded mcafee security suite, installed, restarted and it gets to the user account log in scren and the pc resets. every time.

is this a firewall conflict or something crappy? went into pc world and all they could suggest was doing a re-install (they wanted to charge £200 to do it. yeah right..)

i've downloaded pro sp1 set of boot disks, is this the only way out or anyone know a fix, bearing in mind that i can't even log in and can't remeber how to get into safe mode. i have a smaller hard disk to swap to as a very last resort.

all help welcome, getting desperate now :?

btw, its not heat, and the power supply is a 480w antec. plus its a gig of good corsair ram.

I'm not sure if it's any conflict, but I have heard few good things about Zonealarm. I would suggest you use Sygate Personal Firewall or Kerio, both excelent free firewalls.

Got it fixed? reboot i think is part of windows settings, which causes your pc to reboot when it encounters a critical error or failure. Did the install go smoothly? you can access safe mode by hitting f8 at start.

Why do you need zonealarm and Mcafee security? All you need is 1 firewall and 1 antivirus. For personal antivirus nothing compares to Bullguard. www.bullguard.com It is by far the best and I have used them all. That program has caught more virus' than Satis penis.

Anywho, to boot into safe mode hold down the f8 key after rebooting your computer. It needs to be held down before the windows screen boots.

wanted just the antivirus, wife was nagging and distracting me :wink:

anyhoo, sorted now, finally managed to get in via f8 (wouldn't let me before, very strange) and used the old last good setting. uninstalled that mcafee crap and got avg instead. works a treat, been playing far cry. :mrgreen:

impressed myself now the damn thing works, not bad for a first time build :wink:

Turn off system restore. All antivirus program makers tell customers to turn of system restore. Heres why.
#1 It improves performance.
#2 If you have a virus and the system does a backup for system restore, then your virus is in your back up and next time you restore you still have the virus. Antivirus programs can not clean the virus out of system restore and sometimes the programs will say you have a virus when you dont because it cant scan system restore. Here a direct quote from Symantec.

Make sure that NAV is set to scan all files and all drives, and then scan the computer.
After cleaning the infected files, repeat steps 1 through 7, except in step 6, uncheck Disable System Restore.

Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply > click OK.
Restart the computer.

that makes sense but what if you need to go back, like i had to?

just use f8 again?

by the way, the mobo is an msi k8n neo platinum nforce 3, any ideas how to enable the onboard sound? its enabled in the bios, yet media player is asking for a soundcard. :roll:

Why would you have to go back? You problem could have been fixed through Safe Mode, not system restore. I have ran into problems with virus and system restore at my work place and on peoples person pc's. It more trouble than its worth IMO.

Im just passing on info. 8-)
