Post subject:  email spam

Starting to get really fucked off by these fuck-wod-14-year-old-spotty-ass-company-owners sending me e-mail, all of which i'm sure i will never ever need to read. Ive tried blocking it, but they use some kind of random e-mail address so that every e-mail is from a different address, thus i cannot block the spam.

How do i fix this? (Satis, Pig, Inq, Peltz, Arathorn?)

Complain to your ISP for a good spam-filter. I never have any spam with my provider.

I'd suggest spam assassin - since we use that - but I think it only applies when it's your own server/blah/etc thing. Ie, we have our own server and whatnot, with our own domain name [ppfort].... so I don't think it would work for you...

IMHO, the best route is to prevent it. There are 2 ways you get hit by spam.
1. Through a harvested list. Anytime your email appears online (forums are a prime example, and so are subscription services and sites where you have to register) it can be harvested by a spider. Once you are on a list, the list is sold and re-sold and re-re-sold...

2. Spam scripts. Ever get an email where there were 15 other names on the list, all of which were VERY close to your own? They use a script to churn through millions of variations for each domain. Since these are just guessing at names, there is nothing you can do about them.

#2 you cannot avoid, but #1 is easy. Keep a private email for your friends and family. Don't use it online, ever. Get a free acount from hotmail, or whatever, to use for registering for things.

Unfortunately, spam is getting more and more crafty. For instance, if they don't get a bounce back saying your email is invalid then it gets marked as a valid email, and is sent more and more spam. Slashdot has had some really intersting articles on this. One neat one was about a method called "grey listing". If you read the comments on it, you can see how easy it is to cripple counter-efforts. Anything you can think up, someone else can find a way around.

I know that no one here would ever use cracked software, but anyone that does has no place complaining about spam. The same human nature and craftiness that brings you pirated software is the same that brings you daily messages about penis enlargement and viagra.

I wonder... if you take it up with the company or person, whose products are being advertised and sold, and threat to sue them if they dont stop spamming, would it have any effect?

probably not. This is how it works.

Symantec (for example) throws a bunch of cash at a very reputable, non-spamming ad company.

That company subcontracts to another, slightly less reputable, non-spamming ad company.

That company subcontracts to another, disreputable, minorly spamming ad company.

That company subcontracts to a completely disreputable, totally spamming ad company that spams the crap out of 50 million email addresses.

Someone gets pissed, emails symantec, and they pr guys say "oh my god, I can't believe they did that. We'll get on it right away."

They tell the first company to stop it, who tells the second, who tells the third, who fires the fourth and hires another completely horrible, spamming ad company.

End result, not a damn thing. And you can't 'sue' Symantec because they didn't do the spamming. In fact, they can probably prove that they told the first company not to spam, and it's not their fault if a company (three levels removed) violated their wishes. :)

No seriously, that would probably be the only way to get the message accross.

or completely remove their revenue stream. Too bad humanity seems incapable of acting in unison. I think 20 million customers spotaneously saying "fuck you" and ceasing to purchase some company's products would be more productive than Osama blowing up their corporate HQ. Besides, the HQ thing would probably be insured, and they'd probably get money from the government.

I offen think simular things about stuff you buy from the shop over here... i mean you get some right rip off stuff, but people still bloody buy it. If they all at once said no, they refuse to pay these ridiculous prices, they'd have to lower it.

but then that leads my mind to - Jacking up the taxes, and raising the cost of necesities (spl?) such as water bills.
