Here's an article on Fermi, nvidia's upcoming beast. It's fairly easy to read, while still going into detail on the physical architecture.

I read the first page, will read the rest tomorrow when it's not 2am in the morning!

EDIT: Christ. I'm reading through this and I'm so far out of touch... It all sounds very impressive but I'm litterally spazing out my brain trying to understand it!

Ok, finally finished reading this. You should be proud of me, that's the most reading I've done in a long time! But still, it was good for me as this thing was throwing a lot of terms that I've never heard at me - which made me realise just how out of touch I was.

The part I found most interesting was about the billboard stuff - I had no idea how things like tufts of grass on the ground could be so techincal. I mean, I've seen my fair share of games when you walk in to a bush and the graphics are utter shit when they're right up in your face. You kinda get a white haze around the leaves etc etc - and it amazes me that these issues have been around that long. However, with all the effort put in to re-engineering this kind of technology, thus far they still haven't managed to 'perfect' it.

Hmm, that sounds like I'm saying bad things about what they've done. I'm not, I'm saying it's mad how much work it takes in order to correct such small things!

grats Mole, I really didn't figure you'd be someone to read that, no offense. The first part especially gets into the nitty-gritty a bit. Still, I think it's damned interesting stuff. I'm not a hardware guy by any means, but it's cool how a modern GPGPU is architected. For all intents and purposes, it's 540 (or whatever) little processors all on a single processor die, working together to make magic happen.

I'm looking forward to official benchmarking and prices. Though I would love to have one of these, I'm afraid that either 1) it'll underperform or 2) it'll be priced out of my range.

Nvidia to bypass the 300 generation since..

maybe because Fermi is supposed to be twice as powerful as the 200 series? I've given up hope on naming conventions that make sense.

Hehe, none taken! I'm not normally a guy that would read that much stuff, even if it was a trashy porn novel!

But what you said about under-performing rings true with me also, and was one of my thoughts when I first read it. I mean, I almost outright refuse to buy 'brand new' technology, because I'd either rather wait and get it cheaper when the new model comes out or see just how much better the new model will be. And with the fact that the article states how the don't have any solid benchmarks for certain parts of the chip, it only confirms my faith in my decision.

Still, it's not like I'll be able to afford it anyway!

Heh...I hear you. I'll be building my next box soon (within a month), but I've already decided just to reuse my 8800gt. Once Fermi comes out in March, I'll see how it looks and maybe upgrade then. For the time being, I'm happy where I am.

Though I admit, I'll be missing out on hardware tessellation in AvP, and that makes me a bit sad. If/when I do upgrade to Fermi or some other DX11 game, I'll definitely have to play AvP fully blinged out.

Well it seems that Nvidia didn't skip the 300 series. The 300 series is reserved for pre-built OEM boxes.

The GT 340 appears to be a GT 240 but with a GDDR5 bump. The GT 330's roots are a little more fuzzy, as Nvidia lists the part as having somewhere between 96 and 112 CUDA cores, which leaves us guessing that it is either another variant of the GTS 240 or upgraded GT215. The GT 320 presents a pleasant bump from the GT 220 with 72 CUDA cores.

Cool... by then I should start getting fed up with how slow my 8800gt is on my new box. I hope it's worth the wait. I hope so for nvidia's sake as well... they've been getting pwnt in the retail space by Ati because of all these delays.

According to PCTuning's findings, the GeForce GTX will have 448 CUDA cores or SIMD units and come equipped with 1,280MB of GDDR5 on a 320-bit interface. The memory clock is at 1GHz, but the effective speed is multiplied to 4GHz for a memory bandwidth of 160GB/s.

to compare
gtx 285
cores - 240
memory - 1GB DDR3, 512bit interface, 1.2ghz clock speed, 2.5ghz effective clock, bandwidth 159GB/sec

I just wish it would hurry up and come out

Fermi is apparently launching this Friday

Nvidia Corp. plans to launch Friday the first chip using its next-generation graphics technology, heating up a rivalry with Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The new chips, to be part of Nvidia's GeForce line of graphics processing units, or GPUs, will more than double the performance of its current products. The chips also are designed to work smoothly with 3-D games and support the latest video-processing software.
