 Windows 7
Most of you may know that Windows 7 is the next iteration of Windows, supposedly coming out next year. We'll see if it gets pushed into 2010. Anyway, there's a Microsoft conference going on and the first real looks at Windows 7 are being made available.
Here's an article on Ars Technica. Interesting stuff. It's basically an evolutionary step from Vista... whereas Vista made alot of backend changes, Windows 7 will mostly be UI related, building off what Vista started. It sounds like they're purposefully trying to make it less annoying, which imo is the biggest problem with Vista.

It looks nice. If they hurry up Vista will just be a bad footnote in Microsoft's product line, like ME.

Agreed. Though ME was a dead end... it killed the 9x line. Vista was just the start of the Vista line. So it's probably more akin to win95a. For anyone that remembers, 95a was a serious piece of shit.

Well, perhaps they'll start working on a completely new, truly modular OS too. Something similar to having 9x next to NT. I've heard a lot of problems with Windows reside in having to maintain (compatibility to) ancient code in Windows.

The looks of Win95 would be just fine. Just... don't creep around with a yet another hardware overkilling and by the way useless OS. (@ MS)
I might hop to Linux permanently if that one starts getting worse. Still I am glad they finally admit (in this way) Vista's total failure.

yea, I agree... if Linux ever gets full compatibility with the apps I run in Windows, or actually replaces them with its own (games is the main thing I'm looking at) I'll permanently switch. Nothing's tying me to Windows except app and game compatibility.
BTW, there's also the Windows cloud O/S that was announced recently, Windows Azure. Personally I think cloud computing is a BAD, BAD idea. Because if the cloud goes away, you just lost everything. I'm pretty sure people will recognize this and the whole cloud computing thing will evaporate.

I got in the Windows 7 beta. Im running the 64 bit version right now. Its basically just like Vista but it runs a hell of a lot better. Better memory usage and games generally have better fps. The install is so simple. That annoying UAC pop is gone but not completely. This is what Vista should have been.

Everything I've read makes it sound like Windows 7 is actually going to be pretty cool. I'll probably finally upgrade all these old ass XP boxes. We'll see.
Honestly, I have Vista on my laptop... it's not so bad once you tune it right.

There better be some cheap-ass upgrade from vista option or I'll be pretty screwed with this 64 bit vista version. If Windows 7 really is all that hot, I mean.

There will be a free upgrade... if you bought your PC after July 2009 or so. For everyone else there are other methods. Like academic discounts.

Oh great. Can't wait to monkey around with it and fuck something up in a non-fixable way. It's the MS way.
