Since two days my CRT Samsung 795MB started producing a relatively strong sound of frequency about 10kHz. There are no obvious signs of it getting rusty, but I can't ignore the sound. I've noticed it produces this sound on 1024 x 768 @ 85Hz only. On other resolutions and/or frequencies it works fine. Do anyone has any clue what is this and what would be the solution? |

I probably turn down the refresh rate. 75hz is still doable for most people. It's around 60hz that most people have eye strain. Of course, if you're used to 85hz then switching to anything less may be annoying. Beyond that, sorry, I don't know of any way to fix it. |

No, any less ain't doing it for me. But strange. Yesterday I uninstalled all graphical drivers to make sure it isn't anything software-ish. It didn't change anything. But today, after powering off/on the machine, the sound dissappeared. Now I can hear only a very weak sound of frequency 85Hz when I put my ear over the tube (which is not to be wondered about). Besides, drivers yesterday seemed to be messed up, so I guess it could be really something software-ish but it needed full restart so that the fixes can come in effect. I will wait and see if the sound will appear later because I still don't make a reasonable connection between this sound and drivers, although it is possible. |

Sound came again and disappeared. What I can conclude it ain't drivers, the sound does not depend on anything I might do with the monitor (i.e. degauss, rotations in range from -90 to 90 degrees by all three degrees of freedom) and on what is shown on the monitor. As well, now I know it does not appear regularly. So, it seems someone causes voltage problems. Damn Bulgarian energetic infrastructure. |

Anyway, I'm screwed. This sound causes me headaches. I switched to 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz, which is another suggested mode for this monitor, but I guess 75Hz at this resolution damages my eyes much more than 1024 x 768 @ 85 Hz. So it's only temporal solution. |

Please, consider my previous post ![]() Anyway i've been thinking of getting a decent 19" or 21" LCD but all the nice looking ones have a suggested resolution of 1400x or higher. Id need a damn binocular to read anything at that resolution, I mean the text is a as small as a snail poop. |

Yeah... I don't have problem reading that small but the frequency was just burning so I retreated to 800 x 600 @ 100Hz when it came to programming. ![]() |

lol, 100hz. Regarding the sound, I've run into that with CRTs as well. At home and at work we're all 100% LCD now...no such problems. I run my home pc at 1680x1050 (widescreen) and I'm ok with it, though coding isn't so fun. At work I have two monitors, a 17" and 19" both running at 1280x1024. I code in the big one and preview in the small typically. That works really well for me. |

Now it is okay on 1024 x 768 @ 85Hz most of time. I would say that it is really an external factor. |

However, I consider my options, since shit happens. I am leaving soon (in less than a year) Bulgaria so getting a new LCD would not be god for I can't take it over borderline without extra-taxing. I am after a second hand LCD or new CRT. Still cost difference between new and second hand LCDs are too small here to make me believe they're justified, so I was looking through CRTs now. Any bad / good words for Compaq CRT monitors? |

Sorry, I've been CRT free for too long to have any meaningful input. Perhaps someone else can help. re: taxing... that sucks. Is Bulgaria not part of the EU? I thought the main point of the EU was to remove inter-country taxes and such to encourage trade. Then again, I may be way off base. |

Serbia (the land I would be taking my laptop to) isn't EU. And it is not my frontiers who would make me problems, but Bulgarians. Every time they see my bag (which is a laptop-bag actually, but usually filled up with papers and books) they jump on it, expecting to catch me in a try to take a laptop over the borderline. Imagine disappointment they feel just few seconds later. |

Ugh, I screwed a bit. We talked about a monitor, not about a laptop. Ok, that does not change the story much. I tried to consult about what law says because they are obviously making problems, but the truth about what of technical stuff I can take over the borderline and what I cannot is still mystery to me so that's why I don't want to gamble. |

Fair enough. Bastards with god complexes irritate me, too. Which is why I won't carry chocolate in the shape of guns into an airport. ![]() |
