Post Mr tyranus's new build
Got all the bits, going to build sun :D :D

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600
Gigabyte GA_P35_DS4 Mobo
GeIL 4GB PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Samsung SH-S202JBEBN 20x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Writer
Tuniq Tower 120-LFB CPU Cooler
Akasa Eclipse 62 Aluminium Case
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

Most of the parts are pretty much bang for buck, i could have spent a lot more!

This will be Vista 64bit, decided to just go for it, the sp1 isn't to far away now. Also got a nice perspex side window for illuminated fan and cpu cooler goodness. Better get the damn cabling tidy this time

Just hope it works

I'm totally out of touch, but it looks like you have a meaty system on your hands. How much ?

I think it turned out to be about £1000, the case could have been a lot cheaper, and so maybe could have the Mobo, but the processor and the RAM was dirt cheap, so it balanced out really :)

Not a bad time to build at the moment, a lot of value for money to be had.

EDIT: Bear in mind that about £150 went on vista and office 2007

Congradulations, now you just have to wait for a while until they release something worth while playing on that rig of yours.

Until that happens, try The Witcher.

Wtf is the deal with the quad duo deux due eightythreethousand processors? I heard they're basically 2 processors in 1, letting software thats designed for it run some certain processes with 1 and others with the second.

Yea, most processors are at least dual core now. The one Tyranus is using is 4 core. Nice rig by the way. :) 4 gigs of RAM enough? hehe

Regarding the multi cores, that's the standard. It's basically multiple processor cores on a single processor die... they still look like a normal processor but they can run multiple threads in parallel. What that means is stuff runs alot faster and multitasking is alot smoother. With my dual core for instance I can alt-tab out of a game or something with basically no delay. On my old single core, the computer would hang for a minute while it tried to tab out. It's faster now because the game can keep running on one core while the desktop gets drawn by the other core.

Yay me.... anyway, any questions? hehe

Heh, yeah 4 gig is overkill but vista 64 uses it fine so its cool, and a bit more future proof, along with the quad. hopefully it will only need a need GPU as an upgrade for a few years.

besides, the RAM cost £76

This is the GPU i went with btw

here

oh yea, the 8800gt is a damned good buy. Really good bang for the buck. Not quite the performance of my 8800gtx but significantly less expensive and still pretty high powered. The processor the way to go too... only thing I might've done differently is make a RAID 0 array instead of a single drive. :p

I'm really looking forward to when solid state drives become mainsteam. I think that'll be the next massive performance increase.
