Post subject:  Another windows update issue. KB905474

I'm trying to install Windows Genuine Advantage Notification KB905474

When I do, the update gets to around 70% complete, freezes and so does my PC. WHen I restart, the PC tells me windows is not valid, loads in to windows then freezes. I have no idea what to do next, I've done the following step and I've also tried downloading the update and installing in safemode, I get the same issue.

MESSAGE:
********************** The message for you follows ************************
Dear Steven,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Robin and I am glad to work with you. You can contact me directly by writing an email to [email protected] with the case ID SRZ060531002226 in the subject line.

From the case log, I understand that we failed to install Windows Genuine advantage Notification KB905474, and the computer froze at 60%-70%, then we were told that our system was not genuine. We will work together to resolve this specific issue through the course of the case. If there has been any
misunderstanding, please let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

Before moving on, I would like to explain that a new Windows Genuine Advantage tool, version 1.5, was released and will be offered by Automatic Update Service (in the system tray) and on the Windows Update website. Its name is changed to Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications, and its update ID is
upgraded from KB892130 to KB905474.

The main goals of WGA Notifications is to inform our customers of the value added services that Microsoft provides to those customers running genuine Microsoft software, as well as help our consumers ensure they are running genuine Microsoft software.

If the new WGA engine could not be installed, it was most likely caused by one of the following factors:

1. The original WGA components are corrupted, and cannot be upgraded.
2. The permission settings in the System Files are inappropriate.

Let us take the following steps to troubleshoot this issue.

Step 1: Use the WGA diagnostic tool
===================
1. Please open Internet Explorer and visit the following link to download the WGA Diagnostic Tool:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. Save the MGADiag.exe file to the Desktop, and then double click on the file to run the tool.

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and see if the issue is resolved.

NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or Web accelerators (Programs associated to boost up the Speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, MacAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again when completing the update process.

However, if the issue persists, we can refer to the next step.

Step 2: Manually install KB905474
============================
1. Please download the update KB905474 from the following website link:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/m ... f0926d.exe

Note: Since the above URL address is quite long, and separated on two lines. Please copy and paste the URL to the address bar to access it, rather than clicking the hyperlink directly.

2. After downloading the update, please refer to its location. Please double-click the downloaded file, and it will be launched automatically. Please follow the instructions to install it.

If it still cannot be installed, please let me know if you encounter any error code or message. If so, please help capture it using the steps below (Screenshot):

Screenshot
=========
1. When the error message appears again, press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.
3. In Paint, click Paste under the Edit menu, click Save under the File menu, type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as type", and click Save.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 if you receive any other message.
5. Please send the files to this email account: [email protected] in a new email, with the case ID in the subject line.

In the meantime, please proceed with the following steps to reset some system files and registry key permissions. If the permissions are incorrect, this issue may also occur.

Step 3: Reset permissions
===================
This step may take us some time, thus your patience is highly appreciated.

1. Please click the link below and download the tool.

http://www.ecs-safe.com/Reset_subinacl.zip

Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.

2. Save the attachment to your Desktop.
3. Right click the Reset_subinacl.ZIP file and choose Extract
4. Follow the instructions and there will be two files (reset.cmd and subinacl.exe)
5. Double click the reset.cmd file
6. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
(NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished, you will be prompted that "Finished, press any key to continue")

After completing the above steps, please refer to the Windows Update website to install the WGA Notifications again. If the issue persists, please assist me in collecting the following information for further research.

1. Please click "Start", "Run", type: %windir% and then press Enter.
2. Please find and send the "WindowsUpdate.log" (without the space inside) and wganotify.log files to me at [email protected].

Your feedback is very important to us. Please send me a reply on the results for the suggestions above at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear, or if there are any questions about the steps, please do not hesitate to let me know. I will be glad to help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I've emailed the guy all the stuff he's after, but I wondered if you guys have any ideas.

Also, is there some kinda of Hard Disk analyzer to check if my HDD is ok, that you would recommend?

I think Robin is a girl.

Well, there are Genuine Advantage hacks out there. I'd probably go that route. Nothing's more irritating when something meant to stop crackers stops legitimate users instead.

Can you recommend a decent/free disk analysis program? SOmething that would check for corruption a little be better than chkdsk?

What kind of hard drive do you have? Every hard drive company I know has a free tool you can download. At least I know Seagate does. Seagate tool make a boot disk, loads the tool and scans the drive. They also have a online tool. It may or may not work on your drive but its worth a try.http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html

Check your hard driver manufacturers website to see if they have one.

Ok. So I decided to format the PC yet again.

I've gotten through some updates, but now My PC freezes when I try to update, ever since I got service pack 2.

It doesn't even attempt to update. It just gets to the checking for updates screen and then freezes.

I ran Maxtors disk checking utilties, the hard drive is fine.

Why is this happening? I really need some help.

either....

you have hardware that's failing
you have crappy hardware drivers
Windows is a POS and doesn't like your hardware/hardware drivers

that's about all I can think of.

The only thing I can really think of hardware wise would be my sound card. Just because I've been having trouble with it recently. So this time I didn't install the driver for it. Same shit.

Right now I'm on yet another completely fresh windows install. I'm going to try yet again, and get to the stage where it tries to install this update and just remove it from the list.

Then at some point over the next week I'll get microsoft on the phone and get someone to step me through it, then I can swear at them when it doesn't work.

try removing all the hardware out of your computer that you can do without and try again.

Like the sound card.

After you do all your OS updates, you can always stick the hardware in again.

Hmm, I might do that. I could do that at any point really.

What i've done is formatted, disabled automatic updates. Changed to Microsoft Updates (Instead of windows, just incase that was the issue) and then installed every updates except the one causing the error.

I find it odd that just that one update is causing the issue.

Every test I can think off has been done, every method tried and nothing is working. Removing all the hardware I won't need is the next step.

Stupid fucking windows. FUCK YOU.

it sounds to me like that Windows update doesn't like your drivers. It may be buggy. I remember installing a windows hotfix....I rebooted, and suddenly my computer wouldn't recognize my video card. Multiple reboots and trying to manually install the drivers didn't fix it...I ended up ripping out and reinstalling windows. Turns out it was a buggy hotfix.

Is the update something you actually need? If not...just don't install it. Maybe there's just a conflict.

Well I hopefully don't need it.

From what I can tell it does 2 things.

1. If you copy of windows is illigetamate it bugs you every 1 hour telling you so, and tells you when you turn on windows.

2. It prevents you from getting updates that aren't critical.

I registered my copy of windows, and also did an online verification, so hopefully I don't need WGA at all.

But we'll see. I'll try it again in a month or so and see if they have fixed it.
