thanks for the attempted assistance. What you have posted is the problem, not the fix. I checked a couple possible fixes in that thread...most didn't apply to me. The only one I might be able to do is back out of the code changes I made during my last upgrade, but I don't really want to do that. Thanks for letting me know it's a real issue and not just my problem, though. I was really tempted to just wipe out all my mods (again) and load the board with flat files. Which is just a pain in the ass.

All existing 'broken' quotes will continue to be broken until you edit and resubmit it. However, all new quotes should work

pm quotes are still broken

the answer was I did an unauthorized jacking up of code. It's not really a fix. Until phpbb comes out with an official fix, though, this is better than nothing.

I though it was a style/mod problem? I dont have this problem on my 2 forums.

negativo... this issue occurs in the default style as well, which (I believe) is totally unmodded on this board. It's something on the php backend stuff, but it doesn't happen on everyone's install. It probably has something to do with some mod, but damned if I can isolate it.
