I have a P4 3.0GHz HT processor. (ill have to check for exact model name)

What range of processors do i have choice of up upgrading to? (Without changing mobo)

Depends on your mobo, of course. What socket does it use? If it uses 475 your options are relatively limited, but if it's a 775 you can get the whole range of new and shiny CPUs. :)

I wouldnt recommend a laptop for playing games. Remember that laptop i bought that had the radeon 9000? It kicked ass, but the problem was that it broke loads of times because i was using it as a PC.

However, they are really handy for LAN parties. That is, for the duration of its technology which should be about 2 years tops.

Youve chosen the right brand. Alienware seem to be guys who know what theyre doing when it comes to laptop building and customer care.

Some issues with all Powerhouse Laptops:
---------------------------------------------

- Heat.
- Fan noise.
- Battery life.
- Physical stress.

If you need a laptop for work, office applications or any other non-game reason, then i would heavily reccommend one of those ultra-light, ultra-battery-time laptops.

Not only are they fabulously practical, you can also work on them for more than 2 hours.

Heh, that's one helluva laptop...I'm inclined to go with Def though, laptop for gaming = not really amazing idea. But, maybe you don't want to use it for gaming...but beats me why you'd need such a monster then. Except for the obvious fact that you are a tech snob. :P

What about a shuttle pc? Not as practical, but meh, it's power and doesn't take much space. Shuttle pwnz LAN parties.

I want a gaming laptop because

1. I want a laptop
2. I want to game on it

I'm looking at doing some traveling, so being able to game on a laptop would be nice. :P

Why do you want to play games while travelling?

Depends how he's traveling. lots of busses/plains/trains, laptop gaming ftw.

But hey, I'd rather play games than sight see anyway. Or is it site see. whate ever.

You can also read a good book when traveling. I spend too much time at a computer anyway these days.

what're you going to do in a hotel room at 9pm? Reading is an option, yes. Other than that....watch tv? Yea...that's about it. With a laptop, I could jack into the free broadband that comes in most hotel rooms now and play guild wars if I so desired.

Then there are the other positives. Schoolwork. Email wherever I want it to be. I can bring modding tools to work with me and do level building while otherwise bored. I can install any apps I want on my personal laptop, so I can have Photoshop and Flash and IDEs and mp3s, etc etc. Can't do that on my work PC, at least not most of that.

Jeez...why am I defending my desire to get a gaming laptop? Sheesh...you guys have no imagination.

lol. Would that be considered business expense?

On a slightly related note, there's a debate going on over here about having sexual services (from a prostitute) refunded to people in certain situations. That being fully physically handicapped ppl but mentally sane, who can only communicate through a pc (kinda like Stephen Hawking). They can't get a lover (duh), but unlike most of us who can't/won't go out to meet someone etc. they cannot even help themselves, being totally handicapped. But they are still mentally sane and have sexual urges.

So, one of those ppl, a young man, has taken it upon himself to open the debate and appeared on an opinion show to defend his pov (well, his mum did, not very practical with the pc and all as you can imagine). I thought it was very brave and that he -and others like him- should get a refund from the social security services. Right now his mum pays a prostitute to do the job every other 2 weeks, but having her son to look after she isn't too rich, obviously.

It might be good to add (for context) that social security here refunds a lot of things over here in part or full, from the clear disease treatments and medicines, to 'less necessary' (arguable) things such as breast reductions, logopedic sessions for stutterers, certain plastic surgeries and even prothese penises for impotent men. A lot of those things are more social/mental than anything else then. So I say: why not refund sexual services for those people? They have a right to get some too. It's not like they have much else going for them.

(of course, this only goes so far...most services only get refunded up until a certain number; can't take 5 hours of logopedic classes a day and expect everything to be paid back, for example.)

WTF did I type all this for in a laptop thread? I just ate and I feel awesome, so I become the rant king. Interesting debate tho, and any side-views are welcome.

To keep it slightly on-topic: I noticed yesterday that the local Burger chains ( www.quick.be ) here now feature hotspots in all their restaurants. How awesome is that? Need internet? Just park your car near the restaurant's back wall and try to pick up the signal! I think there are also hotspots in the gas stations of a certain chain, Stella Artois bars (now there's no reason at all to leave bars anymore :P ) and Fnac electronics stores...beats me why the latter have them tho, it's not like you're gonna whip out your laptop while picking a game or something. :? Still, it's a cool gimmick. A guy like Satis could literally buy a game, install and play it online without moving 2 steps in the store.

EDIT: Omfg, I just saw the list of hotspots in my vicinity and one of my favorite bars is on it...and I know this only now?! :o I NEED A LAPTOP, PRONTO!
