Post subject:  GPU Upgrade Issues

Situation:

Lets assume i have Radeon X300SE PCI-X card and a Dell Dimension 5000. Lets also assume that i am considering to upgrade within the following year.

What issues are there to think about when looking for an upgrade in my situation.

I am assuming you mean that you plan to upgrade your Dell (IE get a new computer) and keep your current video card.

If thats the case the only thing you need to worry about is if your new motherboard has a PCI Express slot for your card.

well, if you currently have a PCI-Express card, you'll need another PCI-Express card to replace it. Other than that, there shouldn't be any considerations. Unless Dell is one of those bastard OEMs that does nonstandard crap with their machines.

Derf, the "GPU" is the processor on the "Video card". So your wanting to pry off the "GPU" and put a new "GPU" on you exsiting "Video card"?

lol, no, no.

By GPU i mean Graphics Card.

@ Satis, cool, hopefully it will be that simple when the time comes. I was expecting there may be problems like power or something.

it may have an external power connector...in that case, make sure you have an extra lead on your power supply. Other than that, I probably wouldn't be too concerned. I guess there's always the possibility that whatever you add could push your power supply beyond what it can handle. Beats me. Only thing to do is to try it, I think.

And I replace my GPU all the time! Errr, or something. I wish graphics cards had ZIF sockets and you really could upgrade the GPU.
