Post Strange apparations
In the wake of my previous question....

CS:S did a steam update, and ever since i've been lagging in CS. Thing is: I don't "stutter" in HL2 itself so i figured it had to be a connection problem. But I connect easily, my ping is always ok (30-60) and when in spectator mode I can see everyone else play without any stutter at all...

I might add that I was playing just fine before the update, on the same settings.

Anyone an idea? Very weird I say, because it must either be a gfx or connection problem but it doesn't seem to be either. :/ I'd try installing the newest gfx card drivers, but the Ati site says "Windows XP SP2 recommended" with them.

So, other question: think it'll give me any problems if I install the newest gfx drivers, or is it just redundant blah from Ati? I refuse to install SP2 and the awful windows firewall and everything, had enough fun with those before my format.

Im not really sure what you mean by stuttering but sounds to me like yer having packet losses. I think they have somesort of statistics to monitor your connection stability. Just my idea.

you could try...

uninstall game
uninstall graphics drivers
defrag
reinstall directx
reinstall graphics drivers
reinstall game
defrag
try again

That's about your best bet at fixing a local, computer-type issue. Several times uninstall graphics drivers, reinstalling directx and reinstalling the graphics drivers again has fixed alot of the issues I was experiencing with games. Your mileage may vary.

I actually did all that stuff already... :( But, the horizon has cleared a bit: on most servers all the stutter is gone...it's just on some. So now I know it's something to do with the values of the servers vis-a-vis my own. Meh. Bastards. Can't they all run on the same server values? :( Not that it bothers my skill múch, but as you can't imagine it's not helping either.

Still, thanks for the help.

heh, reminds me of ut2004 demo, in one server ping is nice 120 to 140, playable, in another server ping keeps slinging between 200 800, now thats a bi**c. Cant really shoot anything with that ping.

Lol. K, I admit: thanks to the lag I make lucky frags from time to time, making my score 1-25 instead of 0-30. ;)
