Post subject:  My Linux Experience

Made a 7.5 GB partition on my 30GB HD for a Linux Red Hat deriative called Fedora Core 1.

I had to spend all night dowloading 3 ~620MB zip files which were then burned to CD as ISO's.

So i started installing and i noticed that most of the stuff (although wasnt rocket-sciece) was new to me.

For some reason i had to attempt 3 times to get the OS installed because i twice got messages that said my media was bad (i ran the test, it said PASS).

So i got it installed and got into the GUI. Tried and failed at installing Neverwinter Nights.

Impression so far is that its more clever than Windows in terms of feel, but it runs abit slower and obviously you cant play games.

Will post more.

Linux is typically faster, safer and more reliable than Windows. The games issue is on the manufacturers end, not the OS.

I figured this would happen. Some of you guys cant work Windows right... I didnt think you where going to get very far with Linux. And Pig is right, linux is faster and more stable. What5 slows down linux is the GUI.

You pc noobs need to just stick with Windows XP.

It can't hurt to just fool around with it a bit though...

Hehe...this n00b will never refrain from doing things he knows nothing about. :P What else would I be doing?

Besides, if I really want to do something i'll learn it. It's easy enough.

Nothing wrong with fooling around, just make sure you wear a rubber.

Yeh thats right. And theres not much to "work right" in Windows anyway.

There's no problem with playing with it. Just realize it is NOT Windows. Expect it to function differently, and expect it to be a completely different paradigm. Once you've managed to shrug off that baggage that is Windows, and get away from the necessity of having a GUI, Linux is fast, reliable, and slick. And complicated. But still.

The GUI, imo, is kinda crappy. It's really laggy and slow, and since it conjures up the whole Windows idea, it tends to highlight its own flaws in relation to Microsoft. It's in a command-line environment where Linux really shines.

Need to get a book on Linux if i decide to learn the command-line interface.

A good GUI is indeed nice, but if I want it to look like Windows I'll just use Windows.
Are there any really surprising GUIs for Linux?

I am posting from my newly installed SuSe Linux Pro version 9. Its using a KDE interface. This version rules. It automaticlly updates and patchs.Runs smooth. I have it running on an old Pentium 3 with like 256 memory and its feel like its running as fast as my XP machine. I have 3 computers and this is my slowest one so I decided to turn this into a little file storage computer. Going to set up samaba server on it. On my main computer I will play Eq2 whilst playing SWG on my second computer.

Yea, thats just how I roll...

What do you have in mind to do with Samba server?

Author:  ElevenBravo [ Thu Feb 10, 2005 8:33 am ]

Samba allows a linux box to connect to a winows network. Normally if you have a windows computer and a linux computer on the same network they wont see each other. But samba makes the linux box show up in the network and allows you to turn that linux box into a file/printer server.

BTW that linux box I made is a dell server. I reformated the drive and installed linux no problems. I know someone one here had mentioned that dell computer lock the MBR or something.
