Post HD questions
Aight...got some questions for you lot.

As you might have read, I bought a 120 gig HD recently. Today I installed it. My setup was like this before:

C: 8 gig, holding the OS
D: 40 gig, pretty much everything else

So I took out the 8-gig one, put the new one in place, installed windows and everything, and as you can see I'm up and running and on the net again.
However, two questions:

1)the new drive uses NFTS, while the old one is still FAT32. I can-apparently-copy files from it without any immedeate probs, but would you recommend doing a format on it and giving it NFTS as well? In case that the different structure formats conflict, or something. or maybe just for general speed gain. :)

2)My new drive pops up as G: (behind my 40 gig drive who is C:, and my diskette, DVD and CD drive etc.) . Of course I'd like to make it C: for convenience's sake. So, did I do something wrong with master-slave shit or is there a quick solution to this.

All help for this lowly n00b will be appreciated. if Satis helps the shipment might even leave in a week. (yes, I found some money):P

heheh, wooo!

1) NTFS is a more secure and more robust file system then FAT32. They interoperate fine..it's just a filesystem difference, the O/S takes care of everything regarding that in the background. You can leave it the way it is, or you can format it.... doesn't really matter too much. You might see a small speed gain by reformatting it.

2) You should be able to change this in the computer management snap-in. You didn't do anything wrong...if you'd done something wrong, it wouldn't work. Go to the control panel, to administrative tools, open computer management, then under storage click on disk management.

All your drives should be listed in there. On the bottom part, where it shows the partition information, right click on whatever one and you should have an option for 'change drive letter and path' or something along those lines (getting this off win2k, but it should be similar). Give that a shot and report back with your findings.

You can change a drive into a different file system with Partition Magic, and without having to format first.

bah, he has a 120gig drive...why not just copy everything from the d: drive to the new drive, format and then copy it back? hehehe. Be just as easy (if a bit more time consuming) and probably less risky.

Yeah, I'll prolly go for that. :) In due time. meanwhile, I checked your suggestion on changing the drive letters, and seems it won't let me change the letter on the boot drive. (ie, the 120HD) :( I get a 'windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume' message when I press the "change" button.

It works fine with non-system disks like the 40 gig drive which I easily changed to H:. So erh, any more suggestions? Tnx for the given info, in any case.

Meanwhile I found this:

I suppose that's what I'm going to do then, if you give me the all-clear. :)
