 Need sound
So i downloaded a game from this underdog-site, discworld, i've played this a long time ago and it was fun. So now i install it, blabla, even get the thing to work. But i seem unable to get the sound to work. Any advice is appreciated, i'm mostly speaking to ox here, since he knows the site so also plays games in dos.
I tried soundsetup (duh) and i'm given several options, but no luck.
btw i don't even have a clue what kind of soundcard i have, if any
*edit*
it's MIDI and digital audio i need to configure somehow, for the midi i selected the IBM blabla thingie, it's prolly crap but it works at least. So now i got the bleeping sounds in my game working, but the digital audio i have NO clue at all.

i d/l'ed that from there last year, dont have it now but still, i think the sound wouldn't work on mine, BUT that could have been when my sound was screwed up anyway or it could have been coz i'm on XP, which seems to muck up sound on old games anyway, 'specially dos ones

Yup, winXP has huge problems running dos-based games, and if it runs then it usually bums out on the sound.
There are a few solutions to this, but most aren't very straightforward. The first is to tweak the game and it's setup so it will work under winXp, but that's most of the time a bit of a pain, plus every game needs its "personal" tweaking so you'd bedoing it over and over again.
Then there are some emulators. There is "virtual pc", which allows you to run an OS within an OS, so you can run Win98 in there and thén run the dos games in win98. Needless to say this is very memory-intensive (so not for "simple" pc's), plus it requires you to have a win98 cd lol.
There's DOSBox, which is open source freeware and doesn't require any other fancy things but sadly doesn't support all dos-based games. (even if a lot)
their forum, VOGONS (Very Old Games On New Systems) is also a great source of help.
But, the best and simplest way of getting all this shit fired up is simply digging up on old pc of yours or buy one off a mate/familymember. Install win98 on it and enjoy the games. God how i love win98. (within the boundries of loving any OS )

Quite funny to be able to dig this old thread up. While cleaning up some mess on my computer, i noticed that my discworld game was still on it. Still no sound of course.
After some research, i found out there's a fix for it. Turned out i already downloaded this one, only i didn't apply it correctly. Now i got to tell you it's damn hard to make it work though.
And i also had to install VDMS, well i think i needed it, it was the first thing i tried to get the sound running before stumbling on the fix. Win 2000 and Win XP won't give sound and therefore you need it, or something similar.
SO to make a long story short, i've got it running now, so thanks all for the big help

Lol w00t. On a sidenote: dosbox (mentioned in the above posts by me, a year ago ) has been made even better, so it can even run the heavier dos-games by now.

1 question:
Why in the WORLD would you want to be playing a game that requires it to run in DOS? This is 2005. Might as well break out the Atari.

Because there are som great DOS games that, bit because of nostalgia and inherent quality, deserve to be played again. Graphics are cool, but if the game substance is sucky then there's hardly any fun in it. But a great game with crap graphics is still worth playing. (has its boundries, tho...the low resolutions and huge unit models of some RTS games are just too absurd to come back to after playing stuff on good resolutions.
Another reason, in J's case, is that on old PC's the choice of games isn't always very broad so you tend to go back to old, often free, dos-games.
