my graphics card is dying. It's an nvidia geforce fx 5700 ultra. If the card starts to warm up (say, in a 3d game) I start to lose my video feed. Monitor loses sync. I replaced the power supply yesterday (which also seemed ot be having issues) and need to do further work before I go buy a new card. Could be a monitor (unlikely) or the motherboard (very unlikely).

yea, mx is the crappy line. fx is just the most recent iteration (they got tired of numbering, ie it went geforce, geforce2, geforcefx). 5700u is a decent card. Still over $200. :( I'm pissed the thing appears to have died after 6 months of use. Kinda looks like a heat death, similar to my geforce ti4600 which laster about a year or so. *sigh* I love nvidia and all, but I'm tired of my cards dying premature deaths. I may switch to ATI. Then again, with what 11b said, that doesn't look like an attractive route either.

I don't know if it would help anyone here, or if it works at all, but i read an interesting part about boosting your performance for Nvidia cards (in HL2)

Now is see they also mentioned that you can't use it in the game since that 3Danalyze program isn't stable enough or something.

man, I don't know shit about ATI cards. what's a decent card? Looking to spend around $200-$300 for, obviously, the best possible performance.

Been browsing outpost.com and tomshardware for performance rating...looks like it's between a Radeon 9800 pro for $179 and a GeForcefx 6800 OC for like $250. Now I'm torn. Obviously the 6800 tears up the 9800 pro as far as performance is concerned. But my wallet is already light. *cry*

Oooh...I have a credit card!

For what it's worth: 9800pro is a solid card and relatively cheap...but then again, so is the 6800. BJ, what card do you own again? 9800pro? Or something from the space age? ;)

Well i still run my good old Ti500 lol :D According to the industry standards, its antique :D. But its still working and haven't had one single issue with it so i am extremely pleased with my card.

I think it may come down to what they have in stock at the store. If they have one and not the other, well, the decision is easy. :) If they have both I think I'll vacillate for an hour and then buy a $500 card and a nudie magazine.

A 500$ card would rock. Why do you need a nudie magazine tho? Video porn and telephone sex not working for you? Next thing you know you're getting an extra 56k line to download pictures and 1mb-video clips, nostalgia-whore. :P

What they have at the store? If your not shopping at newegg.com or some other place like it, youre getting screwed. Well, if you have a Fry's in your area that would be acceptable.
