haven't heard about locking the MBR thing.

Yea, SAMBA allows a Linux box to emulate Windows file and printer sharing. I don't think it can emulate a domain yet, but most people aren't at that level here anyway. hehe.

As far as the GUI, there're two levels. There are the actual environments, which is basically Gnome and KDE. Then you can have different Windows managers, which is basically different skins. There are some pretty neat ones out there. Check out Enlightenment, for instance. What's neat about Linux windows managers is they're not stuck in any odd backwards-compatability requirements like Windows...ie, they'll take advantage of all 3 mice buttons. You can have middle-click menuing systems, you can run multiple instances of X at the same time (you can kinda do that with XP with fast-user switching), you can run X and a full command line at the same time, or as a console window... etc etc. Good stuff.

The fact you can multi-task on a full commandline freakin rocks too. Start one commandline session (full command line, not window in X) and start running whatever...then F2 (or alt-f2 or something, I forget) and log into a second commandline while the first continues to execute in the background. That way you can nmap someone's machine, telnet to their open relay and run an exploit, all in their own full consoles. :p

I get to jack around with Unix systems at work a bit, but since they're full production systems (call switches, actually) I can't really play with them too much. :(

If you really wanna learn the crap, I must suggest buying a book. And try to get a book that covers the commandline primarily. Most of htem seem to focus on GUI shit, which isn't where the real power is.

And, actually, I really don't know all that much. I have a firm basic understanding, but I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination.

nah, stick with your Linux book. The two are very very similar, but you'll probably get more out of the Linux books than you would a Unix one. Chances are any Unix books are written very very poorly. :p Feel free to ignore me if you want, though...knowledge never hurts... well...usually.

Well, i got a Linux Red Hat book and it was too simple. It only said about how to use the GUI mainly, whereas i want to know how it actually works.

yea, you gotta watch out for that. Many boooks are either too simple or too complex. I'd shoot for the complex ones, personally.
