First out the gate, though, is indie title Xenonauts, which is militant in its desire to do X-COM properly. It also has a cute genesis – its lead designer Chris England (who is indeed from England) says he was inspired to create an X-COM remake after we wished for one on our podcast. Aw!

Hmm, I don't know much about it yet so I'll reserve full judgement - but I want to see somethign else interesting happening in games with the guns. The ones at that page give me a big yawn. Then again, if it aint broke don't fix it right?

If they create a copy of xcom it is going to fail, at least in eyes, because i don't want to pay a second time for a game that i already have and i am certain that i am not the only one who thinks so.

I wouldn't mind someone taking the original xcom and putting it to modern graphics. I'd probably prefer gameplay more like Xcom apocalypse though... turn based is so early 90s.

Taking turnbased out of X-com would ruin it man. Stick some option to play it in real-time or continuous TBS in there but keep the original formula is what I say. I don't really agree with you btw Peltz, I think there's a huge market of people who would pay for an updated copy of the original. :) But of course, I'd like a more developed idea with more options and equipment than in the original myself too if they do make another game.

Btw, there are still recurring rumors about Sid Meier's company Firaxis (Alpha Centauri, Civ series, Colonization, Pirates!) making an X-Com TBS remake. That would be a great fit I think.

The resume's cut-and-dried confirmation was obscured somewhat by subsequent Twitter messages from Superannuation's proprietor that pointed to a second X-Com in the works. The tweets read: "Apparently, there's a rumor that X-Com is being developed by Firaxis, which I wouldn't find hard to believe. I swear that I read they're working on a sci-fi game somewhere...The rumor is that there's two X-Com games--[an] FPS from Irrational and [a] turn-based one from Firaxis."

As it turns out, rumors of a Firaxis-developed reboot of X-Com go back to 2001. That's when Atari parent Infogrames bought X-Com publisher MicroProse, the birthplace of the wildly popular Civilization series cocreated by Firaxis cofounder Sid Meier. During a 2004 video interview promoting the relaunch of Pirates, Meier told GameSpot that Firaxis had entered into a long-term agreement with Atari to retain the X-com IP. According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the X-Com license transferred to Take-Two when it bought Firaxis in 2005.

I'm not holding my breath on that game being in development. However, I agree... I didn't mean to remove turn based, but rather be like Apocalypse where real-time or turn-based were both valid options. Something along the lines of Baldur's gate... turn-based but with the illusion of real-time. I would also like to see weapons that are more based around reality, at least at first. No chain guns and "sniper rifles"... I want to equip my forces with M-16s or AK-47s with the occasional M-60 or PKM and maybe an occasional LAW/ RPG. If your weapon choices were influenced by the location of your base on the world, that would be even more awesome.

Well there is UFO Extraterrestials ( Steam link ) and its pretty much the same formula and it has that undeniable feel of "I have already done this." The formula has to innovate to truly succeed. The thing is there are plenty of xcom clones, hell even multiplayer Enemy unknown but they lack the magic, they are devoid of innovation.
