I bought an Xbox 360 controller for the PC today...I'd purchased NBA2k10 for cheaps during the steam holiday sales and looking forward to get some play out of it, until I realized it was totally unplayable without a gamepad (as are most sports games). :( So, after some deliberation with myself I got one..figured that in the age of multiplatform there will be enough titles that actually work better on a gamepad than a keyboard+mouse because they've been designed for it.

I hope I won't have to use it TOO much since every minute I spend with it feels like I'm betraying my roots, but whatcha gonna do. You should see the keyboard settings on NBA2k10 - ludicrous. I'm thinking it may already come in useful when Assassin's Creed 2 hits the stores.

Anyone else toyed with the idea or actually have one? I went wired controller btw...figured there's little point in a fancy wireless one when you're gaming from your desk chair as opposed to on your tv.

Heh, I knew this was going to have something to do with consoles. What do you want to play NBA for anyway? And aren't the keyboard settings configurable?

Sure, but when you constantly need to alternate between 10+ buttons and move like a retired handicapped person with the mouse there's not much use. The entire game was designed for/around a console controller so it's really much easier to do it like that. Other than that it seems an impeccable port, though.

As for why NBA...just cause it's light and easy fun. The game has a "my player" mode which basically lets you work your way up from college team tryouts all the way to the NBA. There's more to it than that, but that's the jist. And for 7 € I couldn't really go wrong. I generally only play sports games versus friends and my brothers, but I got a taste for more from humiliating my brothers on NBA Live 2010 on my little brother's xbox360.

Honestly, I'm not gonna use the controller when I can use keyboard and mouse. But it's a simple fact that most big titles these days aren't very pc-friendly.

You should be sad and ashamed. You dirty whore. You tramp. You slut.

I actually haven't touched my xbox in several months, and even then it was trying to get it to hook up to my home theatre pc to do some jukeboxing. Which, amazingly enough, didn't work. I should try it again now that I've got them wired together and the htpc running win7, but blah.

Err, anyway, loser! Next you'll be yelling obscenities at your mom while broadcasting the entire experience to a server full of strangers.

Hah! I already do that :P Also, I play irritating music over the chat channels in TF2 and go by the nick "Ghostofmichaeljacksonrapingkidslol".

Not that I'm surprised that you'd pile on the hate, Mr. "I own an actual Xbox but it's cool cause I don't play on it". :P Hehehe.

But yeah, it's a sad evolution. But don't tell me you've never had the idea that playing some heavily console-origin games (like, say, Prototype) would have made more sense with a gamepad.

I borrow o'crams xbox controller for rally games. no shame in that.

I dont disrespect consoles. I think they have their place. My gripe is when they start dipping their fingers into PC development affairs and generally taint everything they touch.

I have serious issues with exlusive games. Imagine that i invent a color that only black people can see and i publish books written with this color. Now the printer that prints these books can use any ink possible and i choose specifically to limit the audience. It makes no sense. The console exclusive games ideology generates hate and fanboyism which only benefits the console manufacturers. I believe that all the gamers out there are actually worse off because of the exclusive titles.

Are you arguing against what Derf said or for? Cause I can't make it out. :)

I'm all for multiplatform games if they are optimised for pc. Proper use of its superior processing power, proper inventory system suited to a mouse, use of smaller text/icons (as you're close to the screen), proper mouse and keyboard controls, NO SAVEPOINT SYSTEMS, no needless animations for everything you do (want to see how much a hat costs in GTA IV? Takes 5 seconds) and we could go on for ages. Unfortunately, only 1% - if that - of multiplatform games actually does that.

So I'll have PC exclusives instead. ;)

I think some games play better on a console. Mainly games that require analog sticks, like racing games. Or multiplayer-on-the-same-screen games like 2d fighters. Other than that, PC rocks.

Regarding Prototype, I think it was fine on PC. I didn't have any issues with the control scheme.

Oh could be, I was just naming one recent multiplatformer that looked like it was designed for a console. :) And yeah, sports games are also part of that group you mention.

I don't know if all sports games qualify. I've played at least one golfing game on the PC that was fine. I could also see other games built to work properly on PC, like football (american or otherwise). Racing is special because the PC lacks the ability to make tiny changes to steering without an extra peripheral. Not that it matters one way or the other, but I think only a small subset of games are really better on a console.

And many, many, many console games would be infinitely better if they'd been built on the PC instead.

I used to play MotoGP 08 with the keyboard and it was ok.

Of course. No matter how you look at it, keyboard+mouse is the superior form of control 99% of the time. However, the reality is that not many games are designed for PC anymore. :(

If you're on Xbox live, just download Last FM and let it do it for you.

If not, you can just connect right to your PC from the xbox and it'll find all your music files for you. That's if that's what you wanted to do, that is.

I refuse to get in to the PC/Console debate again!

hehe... I've got my xbox and pc connected. In order to share your media files, you have to set up Windows media player on the PC to 'share' out your library. For some reason with XP, the PC saw the xbox, but the xbox didn't see the PC. typical Microsoft networking. Now that I have Windows 7 instead of XP, it may go smoother.

As for Last.fm, I have a pandora subscription, so I'd prefer to use that. I actually have that on my PC, so there's no point in using the xbox to stream what is probably inferior quality when my pc can do it. Plus my Pandora channels are highly refined.
