I loved SC. It's great to see they're actually giving the ACU some purpose other than building and staying alive this time around. He was very much a pain in the ass in the original, because his firepower was weak compared to the more advanced 'normal' units and his armor was good, but he was incapable of taking down air units. And if you think that dead ACU = game over, you can imagine the bum rushes that took place.
Keeping my eye on this.

Y'know, the main ACU pretty much sucked for offensive reasons, but the little subcommanders you could bring in where pretty freakin' awesome. Five of those with shields or whatever could totally trash an enemy defensive line.

You could actually turn them into fighting machines? I had no idea. But then I didn't even know how to build the experimental units until halfway the second campaign. It's a feat that I actually beat most of the game without any super units really, as SC isn't an easy game by any means.
I knew they had more upgrades than the ACU, but not that they were actually useful in battle. Btw, that super unit towards the end of the second gameplay was ridiculous. Cyberzilla?! It even looks lame. I hope it's a joke by the designers. Check the vid way towards the end if you want to see what I'm talking about.

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
supreme commander 2 is out since March 1. Kinda interested to see how it gets rated. I really enjoyed the first one.

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
In my gaming mag it was rated 87% (which is more or less 'great, but not a classic'), but the internet reviews I've seen so far are mixed. It appears to still be a good game, but there have been many (sometimes drastic) changes from the original formula that probably won't appeal to the hard-core crowd who loved the original for its sweeping scale, hundreds of units and intricate resource management. I might buy it on a sale, but not at full price.

sometimes it's hard for me to tell if you're jaded, or just a cheap ass.

Just cheap, I'm afraid. Derf's the jaded one. I'm sure I'd enjoy playing SC2, just not to the extent that I would be willing to drop 50 € of it. Now if it featured zombies and co-op and was awesome, then yeah, maybe.

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
SC 2 is on sale for 50% off ($10.99) so I picked it up. We'll see how it is. With Metro 2033 over with, I needed something new anyway.

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
Let us know how it is. I really liked SC1 but I only played it a year after it came out so I could crank up all the graphics. Might have changed my POV. If it had been as cheap in Europe as in the US I would have gotten it too, but it was 16€ or so.

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
I completed the UEF campaign and have started in on the Aion. In this game, it's a straight progression starting with UEF, then Aion and, presumably, Cybran.
Let me begin by saying that this game cost me $11 and is well worth that price. It's fun to be slinging units around and blasting the piss out of people.
So, the storyline, at least for the UEF, was pretty lame. The voice acting was horrible. The missions themselves were ok, but the maps were bad. They seemed smaller than the original, they didn't zoom out to immense size like the first one did, and the environments were quite often very contrived. For instance, on the first game, most of the environments looked like a typical planet. On this one, you're looking at geometrically placed landmasses joined by huge bridges, or land with very obvious choke points and such. It doesn't feel organic most of the time, and that's too bad. The gameplay is fun, as I mentioned, but seems to have been dumbed down. There's no more upgrading factories to tier 1/2/3. There's no more having to replace your tier 1 engineers with new ones... an engineer can build anything you've unlocked. So can your suit. When you're building something, no one else can help you build on it until it's initially built. You can still assist factories though. There are also no upgrade paths for units/buildings. There's only 1 type of air turret and one type of ground defense turret, rather than 3 tiers. Shields are shields, you can't upgrade them to make them bigger and more powerful. There's no more mass or energy storage buildings. Building specific buildings next to each other no longer has any benefits.
So, basically, it seems to have devolved into a typical RTS. It's still fun to blow crap up, but it's nowhere near as awesome as the original. It was all the little complexities that made the first so badass.
Anyway, I'm enjoying it and feel I got a good deal for $11, but if I'd spent $40 I would have been unhappy.
review, 3/5 stars.

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
How is the "being able to use unfinished experimental units at the risk of them exploding" working for you? I'm guessing you're not using it too often, I wouldn't. Overall it sounds kind of disappointing yeah. I'd heard the maps were smaller and more 'straight' and that the game had done away with much of the complicated energy and resources management, but what you're describing sounds pretty bad. I wouldn't mind the engineers not being divided in 3 tiers anymore, tbh. It was just annoying in SCI to find the "proper" engineers in your supermegahuge base to build on the right things. Was like a sort of meta-mini-game to micromanage engineers. Still...are some units still capable of destroying an entire base on their own?

 Re: Supreme Commander 2
I only completed the UEF campaign, and their experimental units aren't too terribly overpowered. The rolling tank thing gets owned by aircraft, as does the big ass robot. The experimental cannon can plug away at crap across the map for a long, long time, but it doesn't do THAT much damage and isn't all that accurate. So... at least so far... no, nothing too destructive. Not yet, at least. BTW, the more I play it, the more disappointed I am at how simplified it's become.
