Post subject:  Stalin vs. Martians

This is a hilariously insane RTS game involving a Martian attack on the Stalin-era soviet union, with the Great Leader himself taking control of the red army to repell the alien threat.

Seriously, you need to check this game. The site, design and promotional material have all been nothing short of hi-la-ri-ous. If the game is anywhere half-decent (which is reasonable to expect given the surge of good Russian games of late) it's gonna be glorious. And as long as it doesn't suck into high heavens I'm getting this game, no questions asked. :) The amount of lols it got from me with the promotional campaign alone is worth the cash.

Obviously, the main concept behind the game is pretty much clear if you can see its name. It just speaks for itself. The fact that such game exists is quite an event. It doesn't really matter what's behind the name or if the game is playable at all. The concept is enough. Simply makes your brain explode.

Meanwhile, we decided to move a little bit further than making up a bizarre concept and product's weird name. Stalin vs. Martians is also a good real-time strategy game. Probably one of the best in years and years. You can quote us on that.

Check the current PC games release schedule. Especially the strategy section. We doubt you'll find anything more interesting than Stalin vs. Martians. We bring you the craziest PC experience of 2009.

 Empire, Dawn of War II, Soviet Assault...love the confidence.

The game is more or less plot-driven, so we're working on a script wild enough to fit into our concept. In short, the outline looks like this:

Year 1942. Summer. The martians suddenly land somewhere in Siberia and attack the glorious people of Holy Mother Russia. It is a hard time for USSR as you might know from the history books if you ever attended school. The situation is really fucked up, so comrade Stalin takes the anti-ET military operation under his personal control. The operation is a top secret and virtually nobody knows about the fact of extraterrestial intervention.

As you know by now, Stalin vs. Martians is quite a a sight for sore eyes, sick and unique. We think you're already craving for a copy or two, so here's some more good news. The game is set for a spring release, so you don't have to wait forever to lay your hands on Mr. Stalin.

This game is too good to be true. But it is true. It's here and now.

hahaha.

Well, that's it. Under the Stalin's command we must take control over Red Army forces and kick some alien ass. What shocks the most is that the martian forces look like a gay parade of Nintendo-styled cartoonish creatures.

From their FAQ

Quote:
Vopros: Can we play as Stalin himself?
Otvet: Yes, but not from the start. Stalin is our commander and he gives us orders. Closer to the grand finale he will appear on the battlefield as a playable unit - a huge colossus, five times higher than any other creature. Just like it was in the real life.

Vopros: What's your inspiration?
Otvet: Vodka, samovar, borscht and pirogi.

Vopros: Your game is basically like Red Alert 3. The same shit. What's the difference?
Otvet: Since our production budget is 1 zillion times lower than the budget of Red Alert 3, we think it is actually a compliment.

And a music associated with the game in what is just the awesomest thing of game marketing ever. Gorbachov taking on Stalin zombies, Conan-style! Man, when he whipped out that pistol I almost fell off my chair laughing. Not to mention the rain of twinkies, coke, jeans and vodka at the end. if this doesn't make your roftlolcopter, then I don't know what will. Even the song isn't too awful once it gets going about a minute in.

Not so sure about the game, but the video was pretty good.

Meh, that music video was pretty old and bad (and wasn't it posted somewhere here too?). Still the, site is funny, perhaps the game is too.

Video bad? Man, how is a Conan-like Gorbachov stomping through soviet-old-regime zombies (with double-bladed axes, pistols and laser eyes no less), saving bosomy Russian maidens and leading them to glorious capitalist paradise beaches and a manna of coke and twinkies NOT awesome? :P

I agree though, the site is pretty funny, very monty python. If they can keep that up in the game and it plays well it might turn out well. :)

From an interviewer with the developer:

Quote:
RPS: Have you done much research into period Russian military technology? How about period Martian technology? How will you respond to those who take the game to task for any historical inaccuracies?

Alexander: The Russian units are 100% historically accurate (we even use the early version of T-34 tank, since it’s 1942 in the game). And that’s one of the weirdest things about the game. You have authentic Red Army units and use them to fight something absolutely inimaginable. Martian units are less historically accurate, only about 80%

Quote:
RPS: I actually found myself at a conference at the weekend. They were debating development in Russia and similar, and what sort of stuff people had done which was impressive. Someone noted… has anyone over there done a funny game? And everyone was stumped, until I mentioned Stalin Versus Martians. Do you think there’s a lack of funny Russian games? And if so, why?

Alexander: Putin personally throws funny Russian people into jail. That’s why Russians are mostly dull and their take on computer games is 100% serious like they’re creating a nuclear bomb or something. The dullest people are Russian publishers, who have no sense of humour at all and invest money in serious WWII titles, worn-out IPs and cheap adventure games. It is a very hopeless situation and I think that the Jews are involved somehow.

Apparently gamespot didn't like this game and gave it a score of 1,5.

Haha, yeah, the game is getting butchered in the reviews. :) It's down 60% after a few weeks already, right now on Steam. At 7.5 euros, I might even get it for the sheer insanity of it.
