Post subject:  Birthday/christmas present: what should i get?

Since i can't spend any money on games myself, i think i'm going to put games on my list for my birthday and/or christmas. Now i'm not totally up-to-date on what's good and what's not so i'm giving some options, feel free to add some or comment on why i should/should not get a game.

* Orange Box: still haven't played HL2 (well played it for an hour, doesn't really count) so i think this could be high on my list

* Mass effect: i don't have an Xbox, crap :P
But i'd love to know if it's a great game or not, since my brother has a 360 and i might be buying it for him instead.

*The Witcher: what games can i compare this with? Is it like elder scrolls or am i totally wrong here? Any good?

*I'm waiting for a GW-like game (MMO, no monthly fee) anything on the horizon?

Sacred2 any news on that (Pev?)

...

Orange box is a goog all around box i think. Lots of stuff in there.

Mass Effect, is your bro into true RPGs because this one is like whole different thing than diablo clones. Where Elder scrolls gives you freedom and a totally crap story, Mass Effect gives you immersion at the expense of freedom.

The Witcher - Its defenatly something else that Elder scroll. Its good nonetheless.

MMO - Do not get Fury, its crap.

My opinions...

The witcher is good... it's a real RPG, not just a hack n' slash. The graphics are nice and you can bump uglies with most of the chicks in the game. :p Worth it imo.

Crysis is a must-have. Seriously, it's just awesome.

Orange Box... I dunno how much it is now (if it's gone down) but HL2 ep2 is something I want to see. The rest I could care less about.

MMO - nope. No freebies. Eve is cool... still $15/month and you have to like space sims, but no initial $50 investment (I think the first month is $20 or something). A positive thing is that once you get up in power you can buy game time cards ingame for in-game currency. So basically once you make alot of money (like if you're a manufacturer or hard-core miner or something) you could play the game for free.

If you like RTS I recommend supreme commander.

Other than that, no advice. COD in my opinion is too short to pay for.

Im still wondering how the hell CoD4 got 9.5 from Gamespot. That rating is somones personal oppinion and has nothing to do with real ratings, it feels like someone paid for the high rating.

Edit: PC version is 9.0 but its still way too much.

Didn't you say Crysis was too short Satis? Remember you being disappointed with something.

Did you play it online yet?

It's not that short, it's just that the ending was painful since it didn't finish the game. Just keep in mind that it's the first part in a trilogy and maybe you won't be as disappointed as I was.

However, the length of the game is fine. Certainly alot longer than COD.

I did play the multiplayer. I forget the name of the game mode but it's really similar to the battlefield idea. You take and hold strategic points that let you build vehicles and high-end weapons and crap. You also buy your guns/ammo/add-ons kind of like CS. You make money based on personal performance.

I thought it was alot of fun. Sniping seems a bit over-powered at times (at least outdoors) since it's a one-shot kill. But there's alot of cover and alot of indoors, so I guess it works.

Sacred 2 is next year, thats all we know atm. It's not even in beta yet (and its like...99% likely I'll be in beta so I'll know when it is ;))

No, nothing like GW on the horizons unfortunately (well other than GW2 of course... in '09 :P), though if you don't have the expansion/other chapters for it you can always get those and start GW again.

tbh with you, there aren't that many amazing games coming out on pc (or out recently). Hmmm FEAR's new chapter (I forget what its called...) may be worth a look at, FEAR was a good game in its own right.

Fear new expansion was busted by gamespot so read the reviews before buying.

Just noticed Guild Wars + eye of the North (or something, i'm not really sober now) for 40 euro's, that's like .. dunno 50+ dollar? Not a real bargain i guess, or is it?

HL2 episode 2 is great. Seriously. Get the orange box and run through the whole series :D

Roll on episode 3...

re: eyes of the north, I don't think it's a bargain. The graphics engine is aging. I don't know how populated it is, but population was suffering during the last release (prior to eyes), especially in the old games. Just beware. See if you can find a free trial or something. :p

btw, I'm replaying Crysis on Delta difficulty (highest level). It's fun. :)

I'd love to be able to give you advice J, but as I stated in several other posts my recent gaming curriculum looks like shit. :(

However, if you never played HL2 you MUST get the Orange box. I mean, you get

-Half-Life 2
-Episode I
-Episode II
-Counterstrike Source
-HL2: Deathmatch
-Portal
-Team Fortress Classic II

Regardless of what anyone thinks of MP games like TFC2 and CS:S, that's an awesome deal. And HL2 won't disappoint you, the game engine's been getting recent updates on HDR lighting and so forth. And from everything I hear Episode II is a piece of first-rate gaming. The kind we've come to expect from Valve really. :)

Other than that; I think Pev is right when she says that GW2 is the only free MMO on the horizon. Sucks. :(

Just remembered another 'free' MMO; Dungeon Runners. Downloadable for free, playable for free but you *can* pay a very, very small fee per month (like a third of standard fees i think) to use better equipment in the game. It plays a lot like Diablo 2, but I find it a little too simplistic of an MMO (think korean grindfest) to be worth more than the odd play. It is funny though, the skills are all piss-takes really.

Yeah i played that briefly (Mole mentioned it here) and it really isn't my cup of tea. Or it sucks, depends how you look at it.
