lol @ the amazon ratings and lmao @ the antispore website. Man...ain't the internet a glorious thing? This DRM protection must be completely over the top if it's that bad as you guys are saying/amazon buyers are saying...I guess we finally reached the point where copy protection has become so ridiculous that it's actually hurting a game's sales to such an extent that they would have been better off releasing it without any copy protection at all.
You know something's wrong when you need to find (illegal) cracks and files to get the legal copy you earned with your hard-earned money working. I can remember one company that actually offered a crack developed by some pirate on their site for one of their games...figuring it was easier to do that than to issue another patch and correct the problem the previous one had created when it came to validating the game CD.

Yea, that was Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
Shiny and I have both had our computers trashed by DRM in a game. I'm sick of it. I had to reinstall Windows. It's not worth it to me spending 3 hours reinstalling my computer every time I want to play a new game.
As an alternative, for any EA game I may just buy a boxed copy, then download the game from the internet. i'll have bought it, but I'll be running the drm-free version so it doesn't hose me again. I'm pretty sure that would be defensible in court.

I dunno. I guess you would win such a case, or maybe you would have to pay a symbolic dollar. But people can get very anal about copyright. If you consider the software as a 'concept', then I suppose you're ok as long as you paid for the game once. But if you consider the game as seperate units, ie not a concept but a product, you could be fooked.
Still, downloading from the web doesn't actively COST the makers anything, unlike you picking up a new copy at your local games store.
Meh. nevermind.

lol, that's awesome.
Doing some quick googling reveals how much press has been given this, too. Maybe EA really will wake up. This should've been a huge money maker for them. I'm curious if it's met their expectations or if this stuff really cut into their profit margins.
btw, I almost said monkey maker.

Hasn't sold brilliantly in our store either. I don't know about the busier stores who actually sell pc games (ask Mole) but in West Brom, where admittedly we don't sell a huge amount of pc anyway, we've sold maybe... 20 copies since it released last friday. 5 of them were the galactic edition (for £40). For one of the most hyped games of... well the past 3 years, that's appalling. DS we've sold maybe 3 copies and one got traded back in the next day

Anyone else see this:
Dont use DRM, sell average-alot of copies, lots of pirated copies too unfortunately.
Use DRM: Shitload of pirated copies, millions down the drain in hype thanks to antiDRMmovement and really crappy sell numbers.

yup pretty much sums it up.
We still have about 50 copies out the back. I can almost guarantee you either this monday or next monday, we'll have a mint recall and spore will be on it. Happened with Too Human this past monday.

Is that where they take all the unsold games and bury them in the desert?

Awesome.
I actually owned that game, when I was a little boy. But of all the games I had, I never quite figured that one out. Up until now I always figured it was because of my lack of English skills/manual, but after reading this I'm starting to think it was just because, well, the game SUCKED.

yea, the game sucked. I knew someone with it. It was just bad.
btw, extremetech has an article about how EA is trying to kill PC gaming with their DRM.

heh sorry.
We have weekly recalls from Head Office; they can be Mint or Preowned stock (alwyas one or the other, never both). It's basically stuff we have a ton of and aren't shifting. They send a store-specific list of stock with quantities to keep, and anything over that quantity we send back.
For example last week I had Too Human in the mint recall. We had 60 copies in stock, we only kept 18 of them. What will then happen with that stock is it will either go to the website to be sold, or kept in the warehouse and used to replenish other stores when they go out of stock. Same with the preowned stuff, recently we sent back a ton of GTA IV that was preowned (coz frankly nearly everyone who wants to play GTA IV bought it when it was new and has since finished it and traded it in).
Ah well, this week is a preowned recall, so I predict next week that normal edition spore will be in it. I sold one galactic and one normal edition today! What amazing sales for this groundbreaking game that has only been out for just over a week!

lol. Spore is taking the gaming world by storm...the #1 version in Satis' pic, that is.
Just wondering Pev, how much does a gamer get for a returned game in ok condition? Like GTA IV? It's been out for what, 6 months now?
