Hehe, I think that kinda was what happened with that battle where I slaughtered 2000 Romans with a few men: the general's bodyguards' owning so hard they routed almost everyone. They're really tough bastards in BI....they can kill just about any opposing unit easily, barring other bodyguards or frontal pikemen.

Btw Satis, get Irfanview...can read tga's. And is just a neat little program in general.

yea, I gave up on that....the screenshots came back black. But then again, that's why I have fraps. :P

I restarted the game twice now....frittering away my advantages because I didn't really know what I was doing. I'm doing much better this game....ran rampant across southern europe...I have around 180k banked, and am setting up to create my empire. I'm going to attempt to take 7 cities at about the same time and occupy them...I've already sacked them all to make things a little easier for me. :)

some screenies of me beating the shit out of people

Good stuff, hehe. And 180k is a freaking lot of money :P Horde perks, I guess...I prefer settling down, so I never had amazing amounts of cash. (I could have, but i prefer to invest in the war machine of course)

You playing on hard or something btw? Just wondering.

I had the same problem with RTW screens coming out black at first, then a little later I didn't anymore. Dunno wtf changed...ah, I think I remember: try re-assigning the screenshot key in options. I'm pretty sure that was the problem. :)

nah, no worries. Fraps saves it right into jpeg anyway, makes life easier all around.

Anyway, I did my assault....I love the way your horde armies just magically shrink down to virtually nothing when you take and settle cities. :/ So, I lost my bid to take Athens (was reduced to one unit of light cavalry against forces I was hopeless against) and had a draw on another city...the rest I took, though, including Rome and Constantinople.

I'm rebuilding all the shit I blew up previously...already chewed through 50k. But I have a definite empire forming. Most of my army magically disbanded, so not much in the way of forces to pay...which may be bad if anyone tries to take away my cities. But hopefully I have enough of a trade infrastructure to keep afloat financially.

welp, talking about the whole magically disappearing army thing, here's a screenie. I was taking over some city or other...had a decent army until they all disappeared. Ended up with a single unit of light cavalry. And I still won. :)

Heh, light cavalry?! They can't even stop a mosquito. :P So what were you fighting, a horde of steppe peasants? heheh

hehe..basically. It was a bunch of light infantry, I believe. A WHOLE lot...and light cavalry. But you know the AI...they come at you piecemeal, so it's just a matter of routing them quickly. :)

Still playing...I'm doing pretty well, considering. Not much of an army left to speak of, but I have 6 or 7 large cities under my control and a (barely) positive income. I'm training up assassins and diplomats...due to the cash thing, I'm trying my hand at beating things with a small but highly trained army and then diplomats...and if diplomacy fails, I assassinate the bastard and try again.

well, I beat the hun campaign. At the end of it, I owned all of spain and every mediterranean costal city from Spain through Italy all the way to Constantinople. No islands, of course...no freakin' Navy at all. I had 4 large armies ravaging the world, 350,000 dinari in the bank, and a positive income of 5-10k every turn.

The trick was, mainly, trade. I used diplomats to make peace with alot of the factions I pissed off at the beginning...I even ran a diplomat all the way around the 'world', making peace and trade agreements with Sassanids and other strange creatures.

I may play some more...I want to field an army of hunnic elite warriors and hunnic heavy cavalry, just to see how badly I'll pwn stuff. :p

Awesome...I want pics, though :P And look out with that elite army, before you know it you're past the time limit. Had it happen all the time when I was setting up my elephant hordes. :(

I thought once you beat the campaign, there was no time limit.

Well, I'm sure I'm near it if there still is one. I bought Sid Meier's Pirates and am playing that, too. I'm so bored. :( Pirates is pretty good, though...so far, it's very much like the original, just a little more cartoony and with much better graphics, of course.

Oh, yeah, sorry you can continue playing after you beat the game, probably pretty indefintely. I just misread. :P

And cool @ Pirates...never played the remake, but I do recall it getting positive reviews. I'm still waiting for the remake of Alpha Centauri to come out...it's bound to arrive some day.

You can say a lot of things about Sid Meier games, but the gameplay is fucking massive. It can stand years and years, the only thing really ageing most of his games is the technical aspect. Kudos to him for being 1337.

yea, it's pretty funny. I've been playing it a fair amount since yesterday. It's got a LOT of similarities with the original, though I seem to recall the original being alot more gritty. That was probably just the graphics. :p Plus there's a bit more depth, I think. I still haven't done a ground assault...I really need to just start taking out bunches of war galleons and make an uber-fleet to sack Havana or something. Muhahaa.

Neat! I made a pic of the Sassanid perfect army setup, but basically I felt like it was pointless: they just rape anything you throw at them anyway. :(

Good regular infantry holding the center surrounded by all sorts of insane cavalry. Elephants, cataphracts, cibinarii, cibinarii immortals (they're a one-unit army) and camel cataphracts.

That's ranged & mobility & heavy armor & heavy assault, right there. And with the elephants and camels you also pwn other cavalry.

So you see, it felt somewhat over the top. :D I still might put txt on the pic tho.

The invasion of Italy is underway. The two armies assigned to take the 2 remaining Berber provinces in West Africa did so with ease, and were subsequently shipped to take Sardinia and Sicily, which they sieged and gained by surrender. Foolishly, i decided to occupy both insead of enslaving. As a result, there was some rioting, but my armies quenced the discontent before it turned into rebellion. No problem, i had plenty of reserves for this kind of thing anyway. Next stop, Italian mainland.
