Yes, but that was a friendly tournament (though the great countries were there).
Anyway, football/soccer is steadily getting more popular in the US, and with so many people in your country, your national team is likely to make quite a splash in the future.

Yea, having a population of around 300 million people of radically different backgrounds gives us quite an advantage in many things. On the other hand, other countries have a huge cultural leaning toward soccer/football... which when you've got people playing the sport from the time they can walk, that's a bit of an advantage as well. I guess we'll see.
BTW, here people play (american) football, baseball and basketball from the time they can walk, probably explaining our dominance in those sports. But how many countries actually play those sports besides the US? I know Japan has a thing for baseball, but otherwise?

It's down to culture as you say Satis. America seems a bit isolationist in it's sports culture, minus the Olympics. It's a shame though because sometimes when I watch F1 and WRC, it would be interesting to have an American team or driver, just to add to the flavour, but I guess driving talent is too occupied with Indycar and Nascar which ultimately diverts talent from what I think could be more valuable motorsports.
It'd be interesting to see a list of the worlds most popular sports in terms of number of participating countries, and see how America scores.

hmmm, interesting. I did a quick google and found this. Can't vouch to its accuracy, of course.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_m ... _the_world

2) Cricket 2-3. Billion Fans. (India,U.K,Pakistan,Asia,Australia,etc)
3) Field Hockey. 2-2.2 Bilion Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia)
4) Tennis. Around 1 Billion Fans. (Europe, Americas, Asia)
5) Volleyball Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Erope, Americas, Australia)
6) Table Tennis Around 900 Million Fans. (Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas)
7) Baseball Around 500 Million Fans. (U.S, Japan, Cuba, Dom rep)
8) Golf Around 400 Million Fans. (U.S, Canada, Europe)
9) Gridiron (american football) 390-410 Million Fans. (U.S mainly)
10) Basketball Not more than 400M Fans. (U.S, Canada mainly)
Interesting, though I wish it cited sources.

Wow I knew cricket was big, but not that big. And it's probably getting bigger now that there's a new variety of the game that doesn't take three days per match.

It's wrong. Take a look at Baseball ... apparently 500m fans mainly from US, Japan, Cuba and Dom Rep ... the total population of those countries is 450m. Okay, let's assume "Other" countries make up for the remaining 50m fans, that would imply that every single citizen in the US, Japan, Cuba, etc is a baseball fan. BS?

You're welcome to find stats with citations if you'd like. I can't believe water polo isn't in there. I mean, come on! Or naked female mud wrestling.

If you knew what women were generally interested in such sports you'd know why these sports aren't popular.
