lol...healing bullets? wtf? Because getting shot in the head at long distance with a bullet loaded with opium will make me better? Still, that doesn't mean the game won't be fun to play, even if some of the ideas are a bit retarded.

Promotional vid for Borderlands...Claptrap the robot talks about the game, but more importantly, pulls off a great Christian Bale parody. :P

Maybe it's a German name? Not that that would excuse the Lulu part. 8-)

Randy Pitchford talks about the dangers and conflict of interest within steam. I can understand what he is saying and i agree but theres more to it. Whenever we end up in this kind of situation we have to look at the cost. In current case what would it cost for the gamer to leave steam and turn to an alternative service provider.

Well the danger to steam is that there is nothing physical or legal binding me to use it. So if steam fucks up, i pack my shit and leave but i leave without my games. So the cost is the current value of my games. So if i were a steam competitor, i would offer my clients that if you come to us, prove that you own these games on your steam account i will give you a decent (maybe even up to 50%) discount on those games.

So one of the many steps of undermining Steam comes from dealing with the cost to the gamer. remember this is only one of the many steps needed so this by itself will do nothing.

I think these services need to allow us to leave WITH our games. They're our games, after all... I paid full retail price for them. Why shouldn't I be allowed to take it with me?

I think eventually it'll move there, or at least make it so you can transfer your crap from one provider to another. It may take government intervention, but I'm hopeful it'll happen.

As a point of reference, if you switched phone providers, you had to give up your phone number. Not any more... the government legislated that hassle away so now you can take your phone number wherever you go.

Good point. Each copy of a game already has the unique key, so one should be able to take the key anyway anywhere anytime to whatever provider they want.

Coming back to the Pitchford topic and the replies of other company managers, they should take a few courses of international trade or some other trade related courses because:

1. Whenever there is lack of competition, the customer takes a loss. Now it is important to understand that the companies that sell their games are just as much a customer like we are as an individual shopper. The alternatives to steam are not that attractive yet.

2. Valve doesnt have our back, they are not our friends, their main objective is to get as much money as they can. The reason the prices have stayed at an average level is largely thanks to piracy and because valve wouldnt want tens of competitors sprouting up just yet.

3. Valve and Steam are in the growth phase as they pointed out in their interviews which means that their tactics and strategy is different from that when they enter mature phase or decline phase. The question is how will they remain profitable and who gets to pay for it.

4. What will happen once the current managers, owners, leaders retire. They are enthusiasts but theres no guarantee that their replacements are and they might take a not so friendly towards the gamer way of reaching profitability.

So there are lots of ifs and what woulds as the time goes on. One should always adopt a negative or untrustworthy point of view when it comes to companies because they are like the Illefarn Guardian who will do whatever it takes to survive and so will do valve/steam. This somewhat resembles the blind brand loyalty of the xbox and ps fans who fail to analyse what exactly are they fighting for. As long as there is no feasible choice, the one service provider no matter how lovly should be considered as the enemy.

The question comes up.... in 5 years, if Valve isn't growing any more... what's to stop them from charging you to re-download your old games? Or if you haven't installed a game in 3 years, they remove it from your list of games? Or they may charge a monthly fee if you want access to your whole game list.

But I've never really been a big fan of Steam.

On topic: Borderlands impressions are very good. It's actually looking like a game I might get into as well. Maybe we should set up another 4-pack ring here if we can find 4 participants. But I'll wait for some reviews first I think.
