LOL ahhhh the ever-continuing debate over whether nudity/porn is worse than violence. You can take over the Spore universe, as long as you don't look like a wang!

lolz, the wangmonster.
EA is freakin' gay. Poor spore is going to do so poorly without me giving it money.

It's funny cause it's true.
It's funny, look at how 'far' we've come since the ape years...and how we are still pretty much concerned with creating penises and/or boobs alone.

I've acquired this game. It's pretty funny, at least for now. We'll see how it ages... it may be like the Sims or something where I have a great deal of fun for a week and then get bored.

Myeah isn't that how it goes for pretty much any game you pick up these days?
Very interested to hear what your opinion will be, though! It sure sounds like an ambitious game...and I can't imagine you not liking the idea of playing creator, God and leader of a species of penis creatures (the dominant life force in the universe, as we all know).

Soooooo I ... er... also 'acquired' the game. It's fun. Just got to civilisation level. Best level so far is cell though, without a doubt. Certainly would NOT pay the exorbitant prices for it they're charging (£35, most pc games come out at £30) and it will definately be like Sims (i.e. amusing for a week then ignored for months until you find it fun for another week). I said to Mole earlier actually that if you didn't look at the screen and just listened to someone playing it, you would imagine that it was the Sims. So blatantly just been reskinned.
Still, you can see the underlying ideas there, shame they didn't quite come to fruition. Anyone who has played Populous will love the scroll-around-the-world style though
... I didn't make a penis species. Yet. My critter started out as a speedy, spiky carniverous cell (called a Spikell) then eventually evolved into a two legged fly-looking thing with pincers, then a two legged dragon with pincers for his mouth and then became some kind of bird with a spiky tail that shoots poison, a beak and two little graspy hands. He's pretty cool, he can fly around, is fast and is basically downright agressive. We made a few species extinct on the way through the creature stage

Yea, my species has been uber-aggressive pretty much constantly. Flagellas and spikes evolved into poison... then on land he wiped out pretty much every species and went from something similar to a scorpion to a dinosaur type thing.
I'm currently in the space stage. Every stage is entirely different... it's actually kinda cool. I really enjoyed the cell stage, but the space stage is turning out to be pretty neat as well. Terraforming worlds is freakin' expensive and I've held back from blasting enemy species. Anyway... I'm enjoying it so far. I'll definitely be playing another game of it when I finish this one.

heh same, I'll at least give it a go as a peace-loving herbivore race. Assuming I don't get bored of it before then, which I have a feeling I will.

well, a few days later and I'm largely bored. I'll be returning my acquired copy soon. On another note, it seems the DRM is pretty stupid... one of the reasons I didn't just go out and buy it in the first place. It's so bad, in fact, that people are flash-mobbing Amazon and tearing the Spore reviews up with negative comments.
Here's an article: http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2558
currently there are 417 customer reviews, of which 369 are 1 star. I hope EA puts that in their collective management pipe and smokes it.
Funny...if I hadn't known that Spore would have this horrid DRM, I would've just gone out and bought a copy. I'm sure glad I didn't.
(now there are 386 1 star reviews)

HA serves them right. Ditto on the DRM, it's the main thing that put me off, though I still would have been in two minds about it, simply because it looked like Sims anyway plus the creature creator really didn't grab my attention (as in I found it boring and crap actually). That and the price tag... an extra £5 just coz it's frigging Will Wright. He's not even the most inventive game designer, he just happened to get lucky *sigh*
Anyway I've also seen a lot of people not even mentioning the DRM but saying the same as us; they find it fun for a few hours and are now bored of it. Oddly enough I saw someone comparing it to the new Viva Pinata game. They declared something along the lines of Spore is a technical wonder, with a working ecology but so detailed in that, that there is no gameplay whatsoever to keep you immersed (very very true I found), whereas Viva Pinata is smaller and less complex but you actually care about your pinatas and therefore stay immersed (also very true).
I'd never have thought it that way; I like Viva Pinata (and its damn hard! lol) but I'd have always 'hoped' for Spore to be better... but nope. Will Wright has been with EA far too long and has just become too much of a money-grabbing bitch to actually bother making an addictive, fun game anymore. Churn out a few expansions before Christmas and he'll be fine

Regardless of all the crappiness surrounding the DRM etc. etc... I'll probably still end up getting this when I get home (am in the US til early next year) because I can't really fork out 60 odd bucks - with conversion - for a game that I'm pretty sure I'll be playing on and off like I do the Sims... Even so...

This is worth a quick peek even if you can't be bothered reading it... The creature pic is pretty snazzy.
