 Crysis Warhead
For anyone not keeping up on things, this is the "next" Crysis game. It's not Crysis 2... it just follows a different team member during the same time period. Looks kinda cool and from what I've seen I think it's all about killing North Koreans and not aliens (a good thing).
Release is set for September (16th for the US, 12th for Europe).

I seem to remember that they are re-working the engine so you don't need an epic rig to run it with all the fancy stuff turned on, the question is will it still look as good?

My hope is they're just doing some aggressive code optimization. Reducing the visual quality would be a bad move. I guess I'll find out soon.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Crytek has always done pretty drastic code optimalizations on their titles in the past, and always for the (much) better.
If you play the original FarCry today, it would still look slick and sexy. That's how good that engine was/is.

There you go, my (somewhat) unsubstantiated claims confirmed!

Well, warhead is out today. Unfortunately, it looks like it's published by EA and has Spore DRM. So guess what I won't be buying. Too bad too... I loved the original Crysis and Warhead is supposed to perform better, actually have improved graphics, and is more of a run-and-gun action game. Seriously, too bad EA... you had a sure sale from me until I found out about the DRM.
That's two games so far this month ($80) that EA has lost out on from me alone.

Uhm...I just realized: Far Cry 2 is a Crytek game as well. *panicks*
EDIT: after some quick research, the game is published by Ubisoft, not EA. Praise Satan.

yea, it's not Crytek, it's EA. Of course, we've known EA was a bunch of cocks for a long time already.
Praise satan!

So, I played this. I borrowed it, I refuse to pay for Securom. BTW, this one's pretty annoying. It tries to phone home to securom during install... my firewall caught it and slapped the shit out of it. I then cracked the thing and played it.
Anyway, the game is fun. It took about 5 hours to beat it, which isn't all that impressive. But it's also only $30. But, since I borrowed it I won't be playing multiplayer online or playing it as fully as I would normally have. And I would've bought it, too, but no more DRM, I refuse.

The graphics are at a Crysis level or better. At 'Gamer' settings it caused my pc to huff from time to time. I'm running core2duo e6300 (1.8ghz), 2GB of RAM and a geforce 8800gt. So it'll still choke your box more than likely.
On a positive note, that's Gamer settings, about the equivalent to high in Crysis. There are medium and low equivalents and my box would have no issues pushing medium. There're also some great fun levels... there's one where you're on a train with guns mounted on it (automatic grenade launcher and miniguns) and you get to chug along blowing the shit out of everything. So... quite enjoyable overall, though a tad short as I mentioned.

I think the video in the article speaks for it self. I suggest watching all of it.
