Now this part is funny.

Quote:
Intriguingly, Intel also disclosed that the 64-bit feature already exists in its latest Pentium 4 processor used in the standard PCs that sit on office desks and inside homes. The 64-bit functionality, however, will only be switched on for computers sold as business servers, Intel said.

Now we just wait on the crack to unlock the 64bit feature..

lol..that's freaky. :) I'm no computer expert (duh), but wouldn't it require more than just a crack to crank up the 64-bit feature? I mean, a physical adjustment somewhere.

I know you can unlock some chips overclocking features buy wiring pins together.

yea, some of the old athlons you had to connect two pins on the chip with wire or a conductive paint or something. It was a pain to do, but very possible.

Who knows how they did it, though. Maybe they cut some leads internal to the chip, so it'd be impossible to hack. On the other hand, maybe it's just something really easy. I hate Intel. :P

Dont hate them cause they are good :)

I just find it very funny, everyone raved about AMD with the first 64 bit chip, yet all along Intel had one but was just waiting for AMD to catch up.

yea yea yea. :/ I can't say anything, because you're right. I think it's a bit cheap, but whatever, that's fine. I'll let you have your win, Intel swine.

surely intel shoulda not "locked away" the 64 bit-ness and charged more?

I disagree Mole. Their's was a great strategy. Charge as much as you can for a product, and then when competition forces you, you can ramp up the prices with little or no cost. Releasing their full potential would have made them more money short term, but would force them into to spend a great deal to keep up with R&D.

mmm, yes i see why they would do that, besides the software isnt up to scratch yet so the big boom will probably be when the new MS Win OS comes out supporting the 64bit CPUs.

Its very sneaky though, i wonder how it could be done, maybe easily than what i think, after all, its only the General Purpose Register that increases in size so maybe its just a matter of enabling the other half.

I will think more of this.
