I think it's rather ironic that the site of one of humans biggest disasters actually is a place where nature can grow without fear of human intervention.

Yeah, true. One of the only reasons I wouldn't vote for the green party in politics for example is that they are against nuclear power. I mean, sure, it has the potential of being catastrophic but overall is far less taxing (and much more efficient) on the earth than most other techniques. People often seem to confuse the fact that nuclear power is dangerous to us humans/mammals with its danger for nature. Nature adapts to it pretty well.

That said, some of the phenomena on those pics are a bit..off. Like that tree sprouting random branches near ground level, or the weird growths on that bush' branches. And the radioactive moss. :lol:

Some of those pictures were awesome, especially the one of the nursery - creepy stuff.

I'd love to visit too, but according to some posts down on that thread if you want to go you better go soon - they're developing whatever they can apparently, so it won't be that way forever.

It's mad to think that some of those things on the tables were probably just left that way; absolutely amazing.

And I agree about the whole nuclear energy is a good thing; like you said if we fuck up it's us that get the problems - not nature. It doesn't really matter even if nature did get weird mutations, because if all the humans were gone at least nature could have it's own way.

Still, somewhere I'd love to go :)

I looked at going, but it's fucking expensive. I could spend a week in Australia for less. :evil: Still, it's pretty awesome. I'd totally love to go.

As for nuclear power, it's pretty safe now, and in comparison to fossil fuels, it's clean as hell. I have no problem with nuclear power.

Yea, there is. Basically you fly into Kiev, then there's a bunch of travel agencies that do guided tours. Obviously they keep you on safe routes away from the very radioactive areas.

The biggest expense for me would be the flight. It would probably be quite a bit less expensive for you folks, since you don't have as far to fly.

Oddly, and despite various safety risks, I don't think I'd wanna go on a guided tour. I'd rather just get someone near by to sleep at night (within a cars journey, given that I'm from the UK and the longest car journey we have to make is an average of 3 hours) and then just go off on my tod and see what I can find - the biggest problem (other than becoming super human due to the genetic modification properties of anything that remains heavily contaminated) would be the knowing if I was being a n00b and wandering in to restricted areas. lolz.

It's something that's on my check list to do in my life time but yeah, cost is the only reason I'm not doing it right now.

Hey Mole, it's all a restricted area. :roll: Chernobyl exclusion zone ftw! The tours have some sort of special dispensation to get past the checkpoints or something. Personally, I wouldn't want to try to hop a fence into a radioactive wasteland while hoping the Soviet army doesn't try to shoot me. I'll take the tour. :P

I hear you on the money thing. The time thing, not so much... I may not get as much vacation as half you euros, but I get enough that I could float this. Spend a week in Europe... hells yea... start off at Kiev and Chernobyl, then go to St. Petersburg for two days, then Moscow for two days, then maybe 2 days in Berlin or something. That'd be awesome. Except for the expense. I bet you that'd run over $5k per person. And I doubt Shiny would be cool with being left behind. :roll:
